I didn't want to make a whole thread for this, but it's about another leading actor.

I have not gotten to see Book of Mormon yet, but I'm wondering, is Andrew Rannells really achieving an amazing, Tony-worthy performance? Most of the rave has been for Gad, and especially on here O'Malley, but from anyone that's seen it, is he just as good or better? We don't know where Gad will be placed yet, but if he is considered leading does it hurt Andrew's chances?

No. Andrew and Josh are both giving amazing, multi-dimensional performances. They are very different but equally amazing. They both deserve to be at the top. And Andrew sings some very hard very high material the entire show beautifully. Much better than the 2 dimensional performances by all the men in CMIYC

I'm thinking Aaron Tveit will be.
Norbert Leo will not be.

I think MJ Roberts predictions are the closest when he said:

"I think:
(1) Aaron Tveit
(2) Tony Sheldon
(3) Andrew Rannells
(4) Daniel Radcliffe
(5) Benjamin Walker"

With Josh Gad taking the place of either Benjamin Walker or Arron Tveit.
Actually I don't think Benjamin Walker nor Aaron Tveit nor Josh Gad should be overlooked.

Well we will see in a few days!

lol. Norbert is the closest thing to a sure bet for a nomination (let alone a victory) this season.

I don't agree at all. I think it's likely he'll be nominated, but he won't win. Not so soon after his previous win, and not with a bunch of up-and-comers all giving fantastic performances.

That being said, I think it's becoming increasingly likely for Tveit to get shut out. His show doesn't have the momentum or the love of some of its competitors- even the ones that are no longer playing.

Now that Norbert is Leading, I don't think Tveit will get a nod.

It'll probably be Butz, Rannells, Gad, Sheldon, Radcliffe.

Just curious then Kad who you think will win? Cause based on the critics reviews, I can't think of anyone who got better praise than Butz out of the 5-6 predicted nominees.

I saw this show today and while the first act was dull and uninspiring, the second act was lively and fun. Aaron did a wonderful job (as did Norbert and the entire cast). Since Aaron was on stage for about 80% of the time it would be a tough call to nominate Norbert and not Aaron. I equate this to when Norbert and John Lithgow or Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick were nominated together. I think they should both get a nod. Daniel Radcliffe doesn't belong in this company, imo, but because he is a film star and Tony ratings will be considered, Daniel will probably get the nomination over Aaron.

But Daniel Radcliffe is also giving a great performance...

I was just thinking that the problem is, Radcliffe IS giving a great performance, but he just happens to be a Hollywood actor as well. He deserves the nomination just as much as Gad, Rannells, Butz, and Sheldon, the only thing is the controversy from last year. If he won, it wouldn't be as upsetting as CZJ winning, because his performance is worthy of the award.

Sorry, I don't think Daniel has any type of singing voice and yes, he's charming in the role but that's not enough against the other actors who are being considered this year. Again, just my humble opinion.

I adore Aaron Tviet.
I have no feelings about Radcliffe.

Radcliffe by FAR had me more entertained than did Tveit.
Butz deserves the nod over Tveit, as well.

"the only thing is the controversy from last year. If he won, it wouldn't be as upsetting as CZJ winning, because his performance is worthy of the award."

The "controversy" was ridiculous and will have no bearing on any awards in the future, I'm sure.

As per CZJ- the opinion of whether or not her performance was worthy is certainly up to you. Based on the performance I saw- and not just her Tony performance, which was godawful- I thought the award was deserved over everyone in that category except Sherie Renee Scott.

dramamama,

I usually always agree with you on threads but come on, did you not see the same Aaron Tveit I did. That guy goes all out for about 90% of the show. He does a great job at it and clearly can handle the role. C'mon. But I have not seen Radcliff but the whole Harry Potter and the movie thing does bother me.

^ From what a lot of people on here are saying, Radcliffe is giving a great performance. I don't know why people think the fact that he stared in several movies should have any bearing on whether or not he should win or not. If he's giving a performance worthy on a Tony, and most people on here seem to think this, he deserves to be nominated and/or win. So what if he has been in movies. If he's giving a Tony worthy performance, why shouldn't get recognized for it like all the other actors?

Hadn't been following the reviews/reactions to the show much, but I saw it Saturday and I thought Tveit was brilliant. Christoph pretty much nails it here: "It would be a shame if Tveit is overlooked because he was far and away the performance I enjoyed most out of Catch Me If You Can and he was most definitely cheated of a nomination for Next to Normal. I like Norbert, but all of the Norbert love seems a bit out of proportion for this show. He has ONE amazing number in Act I and then nothing which comes even close for the remainder of the show."

(My only issue with that comment: I adored Butz's little duet with Wopat. A sweet, funny, rueful song, and a nice change of pace from some of the flashier numbers.)

If Tveit doesn't get a nomination, I'll be very surprised and disappointed.

It does seem cruel to nominate Norbert over Aaron but at least when I saw the show in Seattle I was very impressed by both. Maybe I am not remembering clear enough but Butz always seemed to walk the fine line between Featured and leading so I assumed he would be petitioned in featured. I remember Aaron giving a sensational performance in Seattle but then again I have read it has gotten worse. Norbert is absolutely brilliant as well but I think they should had petitioned him in Featured because his it is an obvious leading role like Aaron's and this way Aaron would be sure to get in and Butz would give O'Malley a run for his money in the featured category.

I saw Catch Me If You Can on Saturday and it would be a shame of Gad gets nominated over Aaron. Gad is good but I just didn't find his performance anything exceptional. Aaron really gives his all in Catch Me and deserves a nomination just as much as Butz does.

Which just goes to prove Awards are popularity contests.
Aaron gets slighted twice.... (and deserved noms twice)
Butz who is usually very good was lackluster in Catch me but he is adored and nominated.
Patti Lupone got nominated for that ridiculous performance in the ridiculous Women on the verge
And Daniel get's shut out.

Not its not a popularity contest?

Well, that's just weird - who do you think is popular with whom, goldenboy?
