Posted: 4/17/11 at 1:09pmGiven his mixed reviews I am very curious if you guys believe he will be nominated. I have yet to see the show (seeing it next week), but I feel it would be a shame given his great work in N2N if he were not to be nominated. What do you guys think?

Well, his work in Next to Normal doesn't matter. Anyway, I still think he will be nominated, but I don't think he is the front runner anymore.
(1) Daniel Radcliffe, How to Succeed
(2) Tony Sheldon, Priscilla
(3) Aaron Tveit, Catch Me if you Can
(4) Andrew Rannells, Book of Mormon
(5) Josh Gad, Book of Mormon
(^) Norbert Leo Butz, Catch Me if you Can (If he is lead he replaces Gad)
For those who thought NEXT TO NORMAL wouldn't have a life outside Broadway, well it's now playing in 4 cities, 9 different countries and has been translated into 6 languages.

I'm guessing no. Most of the reviews pointed him out as the weakest link acting wise, some even stating he had no charisma or charm to be be a leading man.

Nothing's decided of course, but I think it will be:
2 Mormons, A Wizard, A Tranny and Norbs.
Tviet is still in the running but I don't think it looks good.

OK, I can't quite decide on a final list of five Best Actor in a Musical nominees, but this is where it stands for me presently:
(1) Norbert Leo Butz - "Catch Me If You Can"
(2) Andrew Rannells - "The Book of Mormon"
(3) Tony Sheldon - "Priscilla Queen of the Desert"
(4) Benjamin Walker - "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson"
(5) John Larroquette - "How to Succeed..."
or
(5) Aaron Tveit - "Catch Me If You Can"
I think Josh Gad will be place in the Featured category.
I think Tveit ultimately has a better shot at a nomination than Daniel Radcliffe because he's much stronger in the singing and dancing department. Radcliife apparently gives the better acting performance, but since this is a musical category I think his weakness will cost him a nomination.
I'm sure many of you disagree, but hey, it's only one schlub's opinion.

Posted: 4/17/11 at 4:34pmFrom watching broadway.com's interview with him, I know that he was very upset after being over looked for his performance in NEXT TO NORMAL. I think he should have been nominated for his performance as Gabe, but that's another story entirely. I do think he should be nominated for CATCH ME IF YOU CAN. Although I have not seen the show yet (will be seeing it on Saturday), I know that he has been doing wel from what I've heard.

Opinion... My predictions are in no particular order and are just guesses.

Posted: 4/17/11 at 5:43pmYes, he will be nominated. Most of the complaints regarding his performance were based on the character - from what I read, he was praised for his triple threat performance. He may not win (though I wish he would) but I can't see him being shafted on a nomination.

Laroquette is definitely not leading.
I still hope Daniel Radcliffe wins. And Tveit could very well be snubbed. He sings well, but he's kinda...boring. He lacks the edge the role needs and is a bit too clean-cut.

The Tonys are as political as The Oscars and producers and the money people want actors like Radcliffe happy and returning to the boards. No one with any voting power is the least bit interested in Tveit.

Point well taken, bettyboy72. Critics were not exactly enthralled with Catherine Zeta-Jones' performance and yet she wound up grabbing the Tony anyway.
I still believe the most Radcliffe can hope for is a nomination. Tony Sheldon and others have a far better shot at actually winning methinks.

Posted: 4/17/11 at 8:07pmI still hope Tveit gets nominated. I think he has the charm and charisma to carry off his role that is reminiscent of old-school Broadway stars. Also, it's nice to see him in a role so totally different from rather sinister Gabe of N2N.

Posted: 4/17/11 at 9:38pmHe's very charming in the role, but given the mixed reviews for the show, possible competition from Norbert Leo Butz (whose reception seems to have been stronger), and the fact that Daniel Radcliffe is basically playing the same role with more star power, I think he's among the names more likely to be passed over.

I think Arron Tveit was hurt by the book of the musical and the
bland songs inherent in Catch Me if you Can
Aaron had to star in, narrate, offer exposition, sing, dance, draw sympathy and act. Not an easy feat given the material. I think the creatives were hinging their bets on his likability and talent and left him to fend for himself.
I don't think there is an actor alive who could have done a better job than Aaron Tveit.
Unfortunately, he was sabotaged by bad material in both the book and the musical numbers.
He deserves better. In my book, he is not the problem with Catch Me if you Can. Will he get nomintated? Maybe. Time will tell.
I don't think he will win.
