I've just gone through the reviews again - I literally cannot find a single genuinely negative comment about Aaron's performance. The remark that comes closest is Brantley's, but he prefaces it by saying "the notion of Frank as a little boy lost limits the performance of Mr. Tveit." He describes the performance as one-note, but he makes it very clear that it's the fault of the material, mentioning that Aaron had "intense presence" and a "bright, blasting voice".

What that says to me? If Norbert and Aaron are put in the same category, Aaron's chances go down, but they're still good. If they aren't put in the same category, Aaron is more or less guaranteed a nom. I think Norbert will be the frontrunner in whichever category he's eventually put in.

No one thinks Benjamin Walker or Joshua Henry have a chance? I know their shows are "all but forgotten etc".

Benjamin Walker and Joshua Henry gave my favorite two performances by leading actors in a musical this season, so I hope at least one of them is remembered. I liked them both more than Tveit.

I'm glad to hear you say that Sally. I haven't seen the mormon guys or Tveit/Butz yet, but they both (Walker and Henry) deserve a nod over Radcliffe IMHO.

I can see Joshua Henry getting a nomination, but I don't really see Benjamin Walker getting one.

I am not remotely sold on Andrew Rannells getting a nomination for Book of Mormon and I think Gad will be more in the Featured Actor category. It would be a shame if Tveit is overlooked because he was far and away the performance I enjoyed most out of Catch Me If You Can and he was most definitely cheated of a nomination for Next to Normal. I like Norbert, but all of the Norbert love seems a bit out of proportion for this show. He has ONE amazing number in Act I and then nothing which comes even close for the remainder of the show. By contrast, Tveit has to carry the show and steer it over any inconsistencies. Barring a backlash against last year's love for movie people, I think Daniel Radcliffe will probably win - largely because it is a change of pace for him, he was snubbed for critically acclaimed work in Equus previously and he has been well-received by both the majority of critics and theatergoers. It would not be an undeserved win despite what some of the board might carp. If, however, they decide to make up for last year's cinema heavy crop (Catherine Zeta-Jones' underwhelming Desiree, really? Really?), then it is anyone's game.

Thanks, reggieonbdwy and goldenboy, you've settled it for me. My finalized list of the five nominees for Best Actor in a Musical (in alphabetical order) are:

(1) Norbert Leo Butz - "Catch Me If You Can"
(2) Andrew Rannells - "The Book of Mormon"
(3) Tony Sheldon - "Priscilla Queen of the Desert"
(4) Aaron Tveit - "Catch Me If You Can"
(5) Benjamin Walker - "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson"

In recent posts people have mentioned Joshua Henry and I think he defintely has a strong shot at a nomnation. The reason I think he might not is because I seem to remember that the actor that played his role during the OB run got even stronger reviews than Henry did, no?

Ok, let the stoning begin for the fact that I omitted Mr. Radcliffe from the running. Honestly, I think he'll be nominated only if Rannells is reduced to the Featured category.

egghumour: I would prefer those who can sing, act, and dance receive a nomination in a musical over someone who only can do 2/3 of those. However if it someone is unable to sing that doesn't affect their chances of a Tony nom: look at Allison Janey. yes she was fantastic (acting wise) in 9 to 5, but it still makes me angry she was nominated for best actress when she couldn't carry a tune to save her life.

WiCkEDrOcKS: John (if nominated) would have to be in the lead actor category since his name is above the title, nless of course the producers petitioned the committee to put him in the featured category which would baffle me.

As far as Tveit: i have not seen CMIYC yet and have nothing to base an opinion on. however on principle i think he is far over rated and would hate for him to get a nomination. Of course if he is truly spectacular when I get around to seeing the show and I think he deserves a nomination I am fully prepared to eat my words but based on prior roles i have seen him in I find it very unlikely that he will change my mind, shame I am not a Tony voter

I believe Gad and Rannells will both be in lead where they should be, putting Gad in featured hurts O'Malley's chance of a win, his momentum right now is swelling and only Wopat is close.
When a show like MORMAN is so strong the nominations just flow (look for a slew).
Walker and Henry will unfortunatrly be forgotten in such a competative category this season. (but honestly, who knows?)
This is a fun race and it's great so many men are giving wonderful performances.

Rannells will ride THE BOOK OF MORMON wave and be nominated and there is a snowball's chance in hell that Radcliffe will NOT be.

Whether Gad or Butz will be petitioned as featured we do not know yet, but I would imagine that Wopat has a decent shot at a nomination in that category as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tveit was overlooked again; there is stiff competition this season if the committee decides to remember the fall.

Tveitt is terrific, if you like generic pretty boys (and a lot of people do)... I think he's got all the personality of an underwear ad.

Nothing much surprises when it comes to Tony nominations/logic but I would be truly surprised if Norbert Leo Butz were placed in the Featured category.

I know LOTS of people will disagree with me regarding Daniel Radcliffe, and I'm fully prepared to be mistaken, but isn't it far more interesting that there's a spectrum of opinions regarding possible nominees -- in all categories?

Let's be serious here...Daniel Radcliffe will be nominated. It's a good performance, but now that I've seen all of these, my favorite was Sheldon. I think the nominations should be Radcliffe, Walker, Tveit, Sheldon and Rannells, with Butz and Gad duking it out in featured. I can't believe Butz would be considered in lead. Gad I could see in lead, but not Butz. Larroquette would be nominated in featured, and I hope he is.

I've heard it said many times that the awards have no problem showing their appreciation to the movie stars who come in and get people in the seats, or in hopes of getting their spouses to do the same. Just ask anyone who was rooting for Marin, Betty or Alice/Emily in 1998. It's so funny how every year people chat about who will be nominated and then after the awards people blog about how irrelevant the awards have become. It's still fun either way.

Newintown: Well if all the underwear models had Tveit's voice, his dancing ability and his acting, then I would be amenable to all of Broadway overflowing with the casting of underwear models.

Also, since former underwear model Mark Wahlberg copped an Oscar nod for The Departed and is headlining Oscar fodder like The Fighter, it isn't really much of a put-down anymore.

I said "ad", not "model, but it's OK if you like him enough to change my post. I find him generic.

It's threads like this that keep me coming back here- and shaking my head in sick disbelief.

FYI- the award is for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. Not best voice.

I think:

(2) Tony Sheldon
(3) Andrew Rannells
(4) Daniel Radcliffe
(5) Benjamin Walker

I don't think Butz will be nominated.
He is doing a Tom Hanks imitation and this is not his best work.

I do like Norman Leo Butz's work by the way. This is just not his best.

egghumor-thank you for bringing up Ben Walker. I have a feeling he'll be overlooked unfortunately, but if it were up to me the Tony would be his. He was brilliant. I miss BBAJ with all my heart.

I'm thinking that he won't receive a nod. I think he deserved one for N2N, here, I'm not too sure. I enjoyed his performance, I just wasn't wowed by it.

And I'm with Golden Boy -- even though the critics seemed to love Butz, I felt he was re-hashing Hanks.

(PS. The movie was just on -- both Hanks and DiCaprio brought SO much more to their characters than the musical allows.)

To the point of nominees being able to sing, dance and act: I beleive it is the full performance -- and there are some very talented people that can sell a song even if their singing isn't fabulous. However: I will never "get over" the Billy Elliot boys winning since all they could do was dance.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Nor will I Mama, especially considering what J Robert Spencer was doing at The Booth while the Billy Boys were dancing.
