A new film adaptation of the 1950 classic musical, Guys & Dolls, which has been in development hell for a while, now has some updates. Rob Marshall has signed on as director. He'll also be producing along with John De Luca, John Goldwyn, Marc Toberoff, and Marc Platt. Not to mention that the writing team of John Requa & Glenn Ficarra are set to write the script.

I was looking forward to how Bill Condon was going to handle the material. But Rob Marshall will do. Since he CAN direct and choreograph. I mean Annie 1999, Chicago, Mary Poppins Returns. Please be a good cast

Bill Condon needs to be barred from ever going near another movie musical, unless you enjoy 80% of the score being gutted.

There have been so many attempts to make a new (good) adaptation of this show that I'll believe it's happening when cameras actually start rolling. But someone needed to rescue Marshall from Disney and this is an appropriate project for him!

What a strange choice of writing team. Their work on Bad News Bears, Bad Santa, Cats & Dogs, and Jungle Cruise doesn't exactly scream "they should adapt one of the great musicals!" But let's see how it goes. Despite Marshall's mixed track record, I do trust his instincts when it comes to movie-musicals.

I remember back when Bill Condon was attached Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Channing Tatum were going to star. Wonder if that's still the plan.
If nothing else, Rob Marshall can always be counted on to assemble a talented cast.

I agree. After helming 4 VFX heavy films in a row, I'm glad to see him attached to a project that is more down to Earth. It's also nice to see him free from the Disney machine.

Channing Tatum strikes me as still good casting for this.

Something I think would be pretty cool is if they get Alan Alda or J.K. Simmons to play Arvide Abernathy. Who knows if the former will still be alive by the time this enters production, but it'd be a cool full circle moment for him given that his dad was Broadway's original Sky Masterson. Same for the latter given that he played Benny Southstreet in the 1992 revival.

After his performance in MERRILY, I'd like to see Daniel Radcliffe as Nathan but he still might be a hair too young. There are so, so many famous comedic actors who could do the part better than Sinatra. Adam Sandler? Jonah Hill? Nick Kroll? Bill Hader?
Tons of Sky, Sarah, and Adelaide options too, depending how they want to go with the roles (and how race will play into the casting, if it plays into it at all).
J.K. Simmons would be a great Big Jule, unless they want to go with a Dave Bautista/Jason Momoa-sized dude.
I know mention of their names can sometimes cause nuclear war, but........ Nicely would actually be an appropriate role for James Corden or Josh Gad, if they are approached and if they are interested.

I think it’s safe to assume Gaga will be Miss Adelaide. Marshall’s Oscar creds immediately legitimize this project so it’ll get the big players interested. Also, she played the role in high school so it’ll be a nice full circle bit for her.

I've also thought of Simmons for Lt. Brannigan.

Well, Rob did work with Corden on Into the Woods, so it's possible he could get approached for the role. Someone else who I think would be great is Jason Alexander.

That's not a safe assumption at all! Is it safe to assume she'll be offered the role? Absolutely. But offers are meaningless until an actor agrees and signs a contract. She was, allegedly, a top choice for Ursula in MERMAID and turned it down. She gets offered lots of projects, she can be choosy, and hasn't agreed to do an outright musical yet.

Marshall's Oscar creds are 20 years old at this point and he hasn't made anything remotely Oscar-friendly (in major categories) since then, but actors do seem to like working with him. Marshall legitimizes this no more than Bill Condon, who was previously attached for years and couldn't get it made.
This remake, like GYPSY, has had a windy trajectory with pitfalls every step of the way.

I'm excited for this. I happened to be revisiting the score recently, and was struck once again by how well the Sky-Sarah relationship development is done. Such a well-executed 'opposites attract' romance.

He and ScarJo would actually be great as Sky and Adelaide, though their most recent collab (FLY ME TO THE MOON) bombed. She played an Adelaide type in the Coen Bros' HAIL CAESAR.
