It's absolute perfection. A lot of people could not see this due to the price points. This rich, long, gorgeous recording almost makes up for that. Almost. Music Man Cast Recording

Having seen and mostly enjoyed the production, I thought the recording was surprisingly bland. I found myself thinking it wouldn’t sell any tickets for the production, but that’s just me.

It’s glorious! I know people are split but I love this version of “My White Knight.”

Since I doubt a video release is coming, I'm thrilled at all the spoken lines included on the recording, particularly those capturing some of Jayne and Jefferson's great lines and interplay. I hadn't been aware that Sadder But Wiser had evidently been cut down for the final version of the show - and I'm not sure I needed to hear the longer one, but okay! What a great way to preserve a fun memory, as well as give folks who can't make it to see the show a good flavor of it.

Sigh, I am so behind on my theater news. I did not know this had been released much less recorded. They sure did go out of their way to preserve as much of this score as possible. I've just added it to my iTunes library and will be listening to it on my commute back home. I am surprised this is not available in the Dolby Atmos format.

That reaction is not totally unexpected because this revival has to be seen to fully appreciate the joyousness and spectacle of the actual show. Many of the dance numbers elevated the appeal of the show ( which of course can only be reminisced through the dance music in this recording). The same is true of the comedic moments that we enjoyed in the show.

But the album did try to capture musically what can be done in a cast album..

The cast recording is an excellent companion piece to relive memories of what was such a fun and remarkable show.

The best option would have been a taping of the show!

This cast recording is EVERYTHING! I've been listening to it for the past 30 minutes and it sounds so rich and big. As others have said, it's glorious.

I LOVE that they decided to keep the dance breaks in. It's not often that the orchestra gets to have its own spotlight and on this cast album, it is front and center in the dance numbers. Fabulous!

This makes me want to return to The Winter Garden ... now!

i have been obsessed with this (original) version of My White Knight since I first heard Barbara Cook sing it on the 1975 Carnegie Hall recording, I had no clue it was used in this revival!

Seriously, what is this version of "My White Knight"?

Not sure I like Winthrop spitting up during "Wells Fargo Wagon", but the rest sounds lush, and lovely.

it’s the original version of the song that i believe was replaced out of town by the shorter ballad-only version

here’s Barbara Cook’s recording https://youtu.be/52HBYXmDIBM

The included “It’s You”?? What an insult. If it’s worthy of recording and including here, it’s worthy of being included in the actual production. I find the decision to cut it at all disrespectful to the piece alAND the audience.

Did they include the taps in the unnecessary, make-the-mediocre-evening-longer tap-number-finale on the recording?

What a mess.

The run time is over 82 minutes, by the way.

The finale? Or the recording?

30 songs, 82 minutes and people pay $650 per seat to see this show. It's not exactly a shock/surprise that it would be more than most cast recordings.

It’s obvious a lot of love went into it and they tried to preserve as much as they could fit. I’m perfectly fine with the price and will probably buy a physical copy too.

I’ve been wondering for a while: will MTI follow the growing tradition of offering the new edition of Music Man as an alternate licensing title?

With an 82 minute running time, I doubt we will see a physical release as it would have to be on a 2 CD set. I just saw the following online from this month: "For audio CDs, the maximum length for audio is 79 minutes and 59 seconds."

There have been CDs with slightly longer playing times, but they may be problematic in some players, etc. If a physical CD had been planned, I think we'd know about it as the manufacturing process, etc. takes many more steps and the likelihood of a leak to the media would've been far greater. A 2 CD set would be even more expensive to manufacture, too...packaging, a second disc, etc.

Now, with all that said, a physical CD will probably be announced imminently (ha ha).

My White Knight is one of my all-time favorite show tunes. This is the first time I have heard this rendition. I hate it. All of the beauty and longing is stripped from the song in this version. It left me feeling cold.

The voices and performances are all fine,  but something feels off. I love how complete this recording is, but I think this is an instance where I will be sticking to the original cast album, as no other has yet to eclipse it.

The CD release may just not include the bonus tracks. Then it will fit on one disc.

At the very least I think MTI should offer the revised Shipoopi lyrics as optional. Though it may require an additional fee to the lyricists.

This new album really does sound sumptuous, and I love that the extended dance arrangements (and some playoffs as well) have been included. Jonathan Tunick did a terrific job with the orchestrations — I especially love the little Sousa references throughout "Seventy-Six Trombones."

Hugh is the greatest showman. I know I start to sound like a broken record, but it's true. At least I got to hear some of his slick charm on this recording.

Sutton, is, well, Sutton, which does not quite fit Marian Paroo like a glove (especially because Sutton is a true belter most of the time). Yes, "My White Knight" is too fast and a little awkward, but she sounds lovely on "Till There Was You."

I feel like Jayne Houdyshell and Shuler Hensley were misfires in this show, given how they sounded here.

ErmengardeStopSniveling mentioned in the previews thread that Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman wrote the new lyrics to "Shipoopi" to make the song less sexist. Eh... not really a fan of those changes.

The barbershop quartet sounds lovely, and Benjamin Pajak nearly "TH"teals the album. Wonderful all around.

Overall, I thought this was a nice revisit of a beloved score; there are more pros than cons. I even dare say it was somewhat better polished than the 2017 Hello, Dolly! revival cast album.

If I remember correctly, Dolly recorded very early. Was it even before previews? The Music Man cast recorded near the end of their run. The cast had more time to settle into their roles.

Oh good! So they’ll cut “It’s You”.  AGAIN. I hate the people making these decisions.

Dolly was recorded before previews, yes.

Since they moved Shipoopie to the top of act two I understand why they cut It’s You. Could they have found another spot in the show for It’s You? Probably. But it doesn’t bother me that much. It’s not like they cut Till There Was You.
