That was his vision though and what he wanted to do with it he did, right or wrong he pulled off his vision. For me the score is fine, not brilliant (though parts are), the book works well now and it's heart is in the right place. I will be good to see what other companies do with the material if the rights are released as i bet we will see some very interesting productions along the way.
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna
It would probably be better if this show DID get pans.
But right now, it's getting a lot of shrugs...not just from critics, but many audience members as well. I would say indifference is probably the worst response a piece of theatre can get. If you hate something, at least it sparked a response.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
Wow, so the rumor was true! Brantley attended a performance in which the red lighting didn't work during the big scene at the prom. Too bad...that scene was very effective all three times I saw it in previews.
I agree with that Kad and argue that when judging what is ultimately higher praise- respectable vs legendary, perhaps Terry Hands is ultimately going to have the last laugh- HIS production is the one that will forever live in infamy while I bet this production is barely remembered in another year or so.
The most interesting thing at this point will be to see if they license the show now because in response to blaxx's comment- there definitely could be some regional productions that would be more visionary and sucessful finding the right tone for the material...
lol OK find me ONE director or producer who would rather have a pan than a mixed review. I know i would never want a production by my company to open to a pan, it's every director and producers worst nightmare.

Not when you're producing the most infamous flop of the last forty years.
You want to surpass the original. You want to say "we did the IMPOSSIBLE".
If this thing were panned... people would probably a lot more eager to go, to get a taste of what they did not see in the late 80s.
If it were praised, everyone would rejoice because some sort of magic had been done.
No one cares if Carrie is merely adequate at best.

The fact the show has walked away (so far) with 4 positive reviews and some mixed reviews as well as some negatives shows that they DID improve on the original, some of the positives saying how the show has done a complete 180. However people on here are acting like it's just had pans from every single critic and they tore it to shreds. I know that may be more fun to think that way but im sure the team are happy they have walked away with some positives and mixed to positives. Carrie is never going to be a brilliant musical, but clearly they have done something right.
