I side with Cinco Paul on Twitter. Ariana Debose as Elphaba and Dove Cameron as Glinda

Last night I finished The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and it got me thinking; what about Kiernan Shipka as Glinda? She can definitely sing/act and looks the part, but not sure how her legit soprano is. And I posted this on the page before in this thread but I really think Emmy Raver-Lampman would be an excellent Elphaba. She’s becoming more known in Hollywood with The Umbrella Academy and Central Park... and has played Elphaba on Broadway plus has the Hamilton fame.

Unfortunately I doubt she is up for it.

Believe me, I’ve been fantasizing about that for YEARS. But I agree that she doesn’t seem very active these days.

Emmy Rossum?

Unless the movie starts filming in 2026 (which, let's be real, might actually be a possibility at this point), I can't imagine Kiernan Shipka looking old enough to play Act 2 Glinda. She's 21 years old, and still credibly plays teenagers.

lol no, I said Emmy Raver-Lampman, not Rossum.  She currently plays Allison on Umbrella Academy and replaced Kristin Bell on the Apple+ cartoon Central Park. She was Elphaba on Broadway (there are videos of her on YouTube performing the role) as well as Angelica in the National Tour of Hamilton /Ensemble on Broadway.

I believe with them finding a director so fast to replace Stephen Daldry and taking months or even a year or two to replace him was they want this movie musical made soon. If you look around there are a few major musicals being turned into movies because of the closure of Broadway/West End. I would not be surprised to read soon many more musicals coming on board to be turned into a movie. Just look at Dear Evan Hansen, that movie was made last fall I believe and is coming out a year after it being made. I could see this movie going into production this summer or fall and beginning released next year sometime. If making movie musicals is the best way to get people to see musicals, even though they are not live, I am all for it.

I was throwing out my own suggestion.

Ariana DeBose would be fantastic. Jon is liking a lot of tweets about Elphaba being played by a PoC and I think she would be perfect and more than qualified for acting and singing the part.

When Daldry departed in late 2020, they were still aiming for a late 2021 start.

Also if DeBose is smart, she will stay away from this.  She needs to do something that isn't a musical next.

What about Nico Santos (also in Crazy Rich Asians) as Boq?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nico_Santos_(actor)

I don't know if he can sing but I can easily imagine him giving a hilarious and heart warming performance.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

No.  She needs to diversify to have a career beyond just doing musicals.  Anyway she is doing that (see here), which now proves my point :)

Naomi Scott is probably another choice that could work in terms of bring able to sing the part and has some recognisable franchise movies behind her.

^ I have seen her in Lemonade Mouth, Power Rangers and Aladdin. She’s got powerhouse vocals which shows in Speechless and she’s got the brooding girl to woman phase down

Given that one of the reasons Daldry left is because he wanted to shoot in London and Universal didn't want to simply wait until there was somewhere available to shoot there, it's pretty easy to see they want this sooner rather than later.

Wonder if they might try to stick to the books and milk a trilogy out of this... hmm

Wicked only became a musical because Universal never figured out a way to get the book to the screens. With that in mind and the fact it's being written for cinema by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, I doubt it. Plus, the books are awful and the show is much, much better than the original source.

Of the three leads, at least ONE of them is going to be a POC.

There is a chance they might make a star of an unknown (well, nationally unknown) person but I find that unlikely.

I haven't read this casting on here yet, but it seems the most obvious, young, singing "star" is an actress who is just waiting for a breakout movie role (plus she is a BRILLIANT actress).

Zandaya

Now, I don't know what her range is. She sounded great on the Greatest Showman soundtrack but all those songs are so horribly, heavily overproduced you can't tell. Does anyone know more of her oeuvre?
