Autumn 2024 London

There is a good show in there someplace with a very nice score but it's abysmally directed with probably a miscast leading lady. Ramin is doing the best work of his career but he can't save that second act.

Sean Combs in Raisin in the Sun
 Sep 22 2024, 04:51:10 PM

With all the attention thrust upon the arrest of P Diddy lately, it now seems bizarre that this awful man, while seemingly still involved in the major federal crimes he has been accused of, took time out to fund and star in a Broadway revival with Audra McDonald while also igniting the stage directing career of Kenny Leon...

Sondheim & Ives’ HERE WE ARE headed to London’s National Theatre in 2025
 Sep 9 2024, 10:01:44 AM

I am in London at the moment and had Sunday roast with a friend who works at the National Theater and it is a guarantee that Here We Are will be playing the National possibly (but not definitely) sometime next year. What is not guaranteed is the casting, but he has heard it may have a lot of the original cast with Jane Krakowski possibly replacing Rachel Bay jones.

SUNSET BLVD to transfer to Broadway

What is slightly odd about this ensemble is that in London, Lloyd cast kids mostly JUST out of acting school to emphasize the youth mania of Hollywood. Most of these gypsies have extensive Broadway resumes so obviously not in the London ensemble age group... Maybe it's an Equity thing...

You sound like Michael Riedel circa 2008!

What are you talking about?  There is only one fact stated in this post and it is entirely correct. The Nederlanders are part o

The rest of the score followed suit"

It's not even "nothing special". It's very much a bad score. Not her fau

Kennedy Center Sondheim Celebration Question
 Aug 15 2024, 10:20:49 AM

I saw all six and was thrilled to. However, I have since (or before) seen at least three or four other productions at other times and theatres of each musical that were better. These repertory productions were good...but nothing special, except some of the casting. But to see a good production of a Sondheim anywhere is always a treat.

Stephen Pasquale to star in NINE at Kennedy Center
 Aug 12 2024, 09:36:43 AM

I was at the final performance yesterday and I loved it. Acknowledging some of the critiques on here, I still loved it. Steven Pasquale was fulfilling his Destiny by playing this role and he did it gorgeously! He not only is incredibly handsome and charismatic but he's also such a great singer and comic actor! And Carolee Carmelo! What can I say? I loved Elizabeth Stanley as well and the rest of the cast I enjoyed to varying degrees. I found the constant movement and dancing beautifu

Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk & Bill Burr Will Lead GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS on Broadway, Spring 2025

The fact that Richards and Gold - not to mention Marber - are keen to dive into this play is a disgrace. I understand the economics of Broadway but surely there was another revival (god forbid taking a chance on a NEW play with that level of talent - minus Barr).

Mamet was always overrated in my opinion. From Speed The Plow to this to Oleanna. Hey,

The film version, though not bad, is NOT the musical "Nine"...

Welch’s GATSBY to premiere in 2024 ART
 Aug 4 2024, 08:12:35 PM

I love Fitzgetald's The Great Gatsby.  And I could care less that the Broadway musical did not adhere to the themes the novel indulges. Themes that are still very relevant today.  But to put the show on stage as a popular musical, I completely think turning it into a musical comedy that turns tragic was a good idea, especially when the results turned out to be so good.  Mainly because the show was written by musical theatre writers who know how to write musical theatre song

I honestly can't disagree with you.  Mame is a patrician WASP as written. And is a dance role (I have always advocated for Jane Krakowski's Mame being a perfect marriage between actress and role).

But she made Dolly something special (and Dolly is also probably a Cath

OH, MARY! Reviews

What a wonderfully ridiculous play!  It reminded me of my twenties, rushing downtown to see Charles Bush in Vampire Lesbians of Sodom as well his many subsequent others.  Odd there really hasn't been many "serious" man-in-drag plays since. But unlike Charles (don't get me wrong I LOVE Charles Bush) Cole plays everything in absolute truth, no matter how silly. There are other actors on that stage who winkingly know they are performing farce. But Mary's real inne

Bette Midler - Mame?
 Jul 31 2024, 07:48:54 PM

I'm sure I've written this somewhere on these boards before, but Mame needs a special type of actress.  The character is both terribly pretentious and incredibly warm at the same time.  And of course needs a set of pipes and a wicked sense for comedy. Sounds like Bette Midler to me!  (Mame ages close to Bette's actual age in the show, and then begins approximately fifteen years before.  She looks ten years younger than her age, so let's say 65 at the end.&n
