Audra McDonald-led GYPSY for 2024-2025 Season!
 Sep 24 2024, 11:38:16 AM

I'm happy with the casting it's just that some of the hype about the announcement made it seem like we were going to have some shocking star event or novelty when what we've got is (hopefully) a very excellent group of talented actors that are going to do an amazing job doing what George C Wolfe asks of them. That's fine but I won't be excited until I see the actual work.

It would be like if we got Marin Mazzie (RIP who I'm sure would have been excellent i

The was one of the few productions I saw last year that I found genuinely shocking and life changing in the best possible way. Nicole is giving a performance that would be alongside (in terms of quality not thematically because it's completely different) performances such as Alice Ripley in Gypsy, Christine Ebersole in Grey Gardens, Patti LuPone in Gypsy, Kelli in Bridges, Bernadette in Sunday etc. i.e. this is not just an average performance it's on a top shelf

But it's nothing without the production alongside of her that is the canvas for her performance and character. The performance would NOT work in a a traditional production - which is why it was so puzzling to even imagine her in the role beforehand and I really wasn't looking forward to THAT production. I think you should be excited about THIS production for this reason.

People talk about 'vision', 'vision' of directors and it's become super cringeworthy* when someone uses the term to describe rather pedestrian staging that anyone can think of. This is not that - Jamie Lloyd genuinely had the imagination to think of Nicole S in this role and in a staging that makes it work and corrects some of the questionable material. This is vision, this is amazing - I cannot wait to see the production again.

* Here is an example - someone says 'Thomas Kail' brought his 'unique creative vision'. How can anyone describe THAT director of THAT production as having a unique vision? John DOYLE hate him or love him brought a unique creative vision to Sweeney Todd.

I can’t remember where I read this but if I recall correctly Angela Lansbury was not keen to be directed by Arthur Laurents again after ‘Whistle’ and needed some convincing to make happen.

It could be right because those numbers do not seem unheard of anymore, but that would be a difficult business to make a profit unless this can maintain momentum for close to a year I would think.....Patti LuPone Gypsy was $9 million I believe, but of course that was done on the cheap and it was 2008. Sam Mendes/Bernadette production was $8 million in 2003.

$8 million in 2003 is $13.7 million in 2024 after inflation I believe. Given at least anecdotally Broadway costs seem to be rising

Exactly, I mean he walks outside of the building and sings a live performance while it is live streamed inside the theatre the whole time for god sake. That is obviously quite a visual feast and I think a major reason why the song works in this productions (my previous reaction to this song is boredom at best or cringe at worst). I think people watch to try to trip people up/split hairs on small details to try and find someone to argue about but it’s pointless to do this when it co

I’m going to do what I do every time a show like this comes along (eg Follies, War Paint, Company etc). Get excited at how good early ticket sales look, claim things are looking just fine, refresh the seating chart daily and defend the show in the grosses week proudly until we hit the approx. 11-12 week mark before there appears to be just too many seats available before show time than there used to, and a week later we see the average ticket price decline and erode a slow death wh

Broadway Flash said: "Sutton can do the next revival in ten years and she’ll be the same age as Patti was. Audra also apparently did Roses turn in concert and people said it was bad. Why wouldn’t you want to see her do Gypsy? She’s a great actress, but I feel like people don’t give her that. "

You’re right - it’s probably unfair of me to judge a concert performance (I also have seen Tracie Bennett do Rose’s turn and I wish sh

I think I might have seen Sutton Foster perform Rose’s Turn in concert once and the fact I haven’t thought about it since and barely remember it probably tells me everything I need to know. I would expect her to do the show one day in a prestigious regional theatre but I can’t see it happening on Broadway now. It was either/or with Audra and the theatre gods have chosen Audra. The racial concept of the production also means it’s practically impossible for Sutton to rep

Awww I like that in musicals we tend to idolise the character of Rose and give Laurents a little credit for SOMETHING in his career god help him his ego probably needed it.

Very much looking forward to what Audra and George do with it. I’m not worried. If anything I find it hard to believe Laurents could have worked with Audra’s classical voice.

Is it possible the schedule might be influenced by the leads? If I was Adam lambert and I wanted to be on Broadway the prospect of having a Sunday off would make it more compelling because you could actually socialise on Saturday night. The typical Broadway 8 shows a week really seems to require you to live like a nun.

No it’s more than that - her vocals and interpretation of the role changed. It’s remarkably better than what is on the cast recording (which is almost identical to opening night interpretation). Which is also in turn different from previews because of the reasons you suggest.

I’m not saying Laurents did this but as he noted in his book something changed and it was more than simply vocal health.

The first. I mean that the event status with Redmayne has gone. It seems pretty clear from the current advance that Redmayne was a major box office draw and that the production was centred around that. I don’t think it’s a guarantee that the show will last till March with the suggested running costs right now. We will have to see.

Riedel might have impacted the word of mouth but of course it was Laurents who impacted the actual production itself, according to David B who played Tulsa Arthur Laurents stopped several directorial choices - such as the idea of Rose’s face being covered with smeared makeup at the end of Rose’s Turn. No wonder Ben Brantley described th

I said this before but I honestly believe Adam Lambert has it in him to have the most haunting vocals of ‘I don’t care much’ ever. What is exciting but probably a little nerve wracking for the producers is it’s clear the ticket sales will be dependent on the replacement cast making an event out of the production again through the strength of their performances. I wish them well!!

Maybe having low expectations helps but I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The score is catchy and fun, there are a number of clever lyrics. The second act is too long and maybe falls apart a little but not terrible. There is a really nice leading performance from Jo Foster. In a weird way the show is starting to feel a little old fashioned because I wonder if queer culture has been explored to death in recent years. I guess you have to get past the somewhat cringe idea of the
