My top 3 directing picks are Steven Spielberg, Patty Jenkins, and Joe Mantello

But doesn't this film just scream for a woman director? Taymor?

I actually thought that Joe Mantello's direction was the weakest part of the show.  His transitions from big numbers to book scenes are right out of the 60s, and not in a good way.  I can't help thinking that he does not have enough movie credits to direct a big musical...think Harold Prince for A Little Night Music or Susan Strohman (sic) for The Producers.  Could probably think of a few more if I tried hard.

I wonder if the script is done

Wasn't Damien Chazelle's name thrown out there at some point?

Ava DuVernay would do a terrific job

If not Daldry then surely Bill Condon should be the next choice. If he's able to pull off another Jennifer Hudson moment with Defying Gravity then I'd be for it.

My second choice is Rob Marshall his version of Into the Woods was a very stylish and good adaption in my opinion.

Olivia Wilde will probably be busy with her Spider-Woman project for the foreseeable future, but I wonder if she'd be a good choice for this. She'd certainly be able to bring out the female friendship aspect of the show based on what she did with Booksmart, and she'll have a big budget blockbuster under her belt if Spider-Woman turns out to be a success.

I think Baz Luhrmann should do it.

I'm not sure if spectacle and camp is her style. Making Wicked a thoughtful, quiet musical would just expose how bad some of the lyrics are.

If the right Julie Taymor showed up, it could be interesting but I haven't seen her in years.

I think you need someone who treats the material as serious and earnest the way He Who Shall Not Be Named gave weight to the very obvious allegory in X Men. Or you need someone to treat this as fluff and appeal to the teen girl demographic. What's Kenny Ortega doing?
"

From what I've heard, Taymor has a bit of a god complex about shows and overly complicates plots to make them more referential of classical works. I think she would Spiderman it. I don't want to see her touching an already loved musical work, a new project sure.

You haven’t seen Julie Taymor in a while because she’s been making films. Broadway ain’t the end all of everything, folks.

She’s making films because it’s not unusual to spend 75 million dollars on one.

What about Patty Jenkins doing it?

If Taymor was hired, she would spend the whole budget on the monkeys and the broom.

I agree Globefan. I know Baz is a love him or hate him style over substance director but I would love to see the visuals he would bring to a movie like this. Thinking of Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge singing I'll Fly Away I also have faith that Baz could handle more quiet scenes like I'm Not That Girl.

Are they going to rework the score? Fix some lyrics...make it sounds less...tinny....add some melodies...cut some songs? If they do that, they should also rethink the entire Broadway book and work from scratch from the source material.

They're adding two new songs. And they're not gonna be slavish to the stage production.

If nobody else wants the job, I’ll do it. You know the saying “fast, cheap, good- pick two?” With me, it’s “fast, cheap, good- you wanted any of those, you would have hired somebody who’s directed a movie before.”

My guess is because people still think hating La La Land is a personality trait

Joe Mantello would be my pick, so long as he has an amazing team of art directors, costume designers, cinematographers, and CGI directors etc.

Mantello has had more TV experience than film
