Posted: 6/14/10 at 2:39pmI didn't care for some of those winners, and thought that there were more deserving ones in the categories. But Memphis was one of the few times when I left a show wishing I hadn't gone, because there were hardly any redeeming qualities about it.

In the Heights. I don't get this one.. Don't like the musical and it seemed like a glorified after school special with music.
Spring Awakening - sorry but it's dull.
Contact - What was that? It wan't even a musical
Titanic is missing from the list- I can't believe that won over
The Life!
I do like Memphis and given the choices-- it deserved the award.
The rest are all acceptable

First, I loved Memphis. I think this board is extremely unkind to this wonderful show.
2000: Contact: I liked Contact, but didn't love it. Definitely not Best Musical material.
2001: The Producers: Did not like The Producers at all.
2002: Thoroughly Modern Millie: What a bland boring show. I actually found myself nodding off during this dull dull show. (I rarely nod off at Broadway shows.)
2003: Hairspray: Loved Hairspray and it definitely deserved it's win.
2004: Avenue Q: Loved Avenue Q, saw it twice and was thrilled that such an intimate show won.
2005: Spamalot: Enjoyed Spamalot. Not sure it was Best Musical material, but a fun, silly show and definitely a good time.
2006: Jersey Boys: Adored Jersey Boys and for me it was the win for Dreamgirls that Nine so inappropriately stole. Jersey Boys is brilliant.
2007: Spring Awakening: What an overrated show. I was shocked at how much attention this rather mediocre show got. American Idiot is infinitely more interesting.
2008: In the Heights: Loved In the Heights. Very pleased that it won.
2009: Billy Elliot: Beyond overrated - in so many regards. Wow! I still can't believe this won.
2010: Memphis: Loved Memphis and definitely think it deserved it's win.
I realize that my opinions go against many of those here. Oh, well.

For those of you who are ranking Contact as your weakest or in your bottom 3... did you even see it? Like be honest? If you saw it, you would know how excellent it was. Just because it was a dance show doesn't mean it wasn't good. Movin' Out would have won in 2003 if Hairspray hadn't been around.
Also, I don't remember. Did Spring Awakening recoup?

I wholeheartedly agree. Anyone who had actually seen CONTACT couldn't possibly rank it among the worst. Whether or not it's a "musical" is irrelevant, because it was judged as thus.
And that's correct...if HAIRSPRAY hadn't been around, MOVIN' OUT would have won hands down.
I do believe SPRING AWAKENING recouped, but don't quote me on that.

Memphis is clearly the worst winner in the past ten (er, eleven) years. I wouldn't have even nominated it for Best Musical.
Movin' Out would have gotten my vote over Hairspray. If something is eligible for a certain category, it shouldn't be discriminated against because it's so drastically different than the others (i.e. a dance show in the category of Best Musical). It should be judged fairly.
