THE NOTEBOOK to Close on Broadway on December 15, 2024
 Sep 24 2024, 11:29:34 AM

People who work in the industry love to slip bits of casting and production news, and some of us who live in the city - gasp! - know some of them. It’s not that hard to grasp. And this is a message board, not a newspaper; no one needs to cite sources.

Aisha Jackson is going to be great. I’m excited to see the energy she brings to the role, and the pipes.

Audra McDonald-led GYPSY for 2024-2025 Season!

Out of genuine curiosity for the folks who keep saying this, who would you all have cast that would have delivered a performance you couldn’t already picture in your head in some way?

Agree to disagree. She absolutely rips into “What Happens” and “My Days” in The Notebook, and I recall the video of her singing “Somewhere That’s Green” being quite affecting.

Bunch of grumps in the thread this AM. I’m personally thrilled for Joy and Jordan. I thought both of their performances were wonderful in The Notebook and I’m excited to see particularly Jordan work with material that’s better than what Younger Allie has to work with.

Joy is going to win a Tony for this. Mark my words.

I’ve heard Lesli Margherita is Tessie Tura. Heard a few names for the others, but nothing “official”.

Louise and June being announced tomorrow, and the silhouettes are looking an awful lot like Joy and Jordan, as rumored.

I wonder if they will be reviewed again. Since this is intended to be a long-running revival (though I doubt the staying power without genuine star casting), they’ll likely hold off until at least a few years down the line. At least from any genuine critics.

Shame on me, but I saw it again the other night and left at intermission. Adam and Auli’i are certainly warmer and more inviting performers than their predecessors; but the production is still an over-directed, ove

Yes. You’ll be in a theater or quickly running to a theater to make it on time for nearly 8 hours.

Why does Herbie need to give a groundbreaking performance? He’s the third lead, but he’s very much meant to be part of the collateral damage Rose leaves in her wake. Why would they drastically change his dramatic purpose?

Also, I think folks are really running with this idea that George C. Wolfe’s vision of Gypsy will be some kind of radical reinterpretation of the piece. There has been nothing to imply that it will, with the exception of the subtext ethnicity-conscio

Saying casting is “on the nose” and that you can “already see his performance” doesn’t exactly imply you’re thrilled, but I also didn’t say you insulted him; you inferred that. Take your foot off the gas.

Your overreaction also feels deeply online, fwiw.

I’m neither a Gypsy fanboy, nor a Danny Burstein diehard, but since when did one of our finest, most consistently excellent musical theatre actors become “on the nose” for a role like Herbie? This feels like such a deeply online take.

Interesting! I was hoping we’d get more early 2025 announcements so I could add more to my trip roster in January. This may have just made the cut.

Anna Zavelson was tremendous in Piazza, so I’m thrilled to see her making her Broadway debut. She’ll be wonderful. Excited to catch her in it.

STEREOPHONIC Announces Final Extension

Even more noteworthy is that Tom Pecinka, Sarah Pidgeon, and Juliana Canfield are taking their final bows in just two weeks! And Rebecca Naomi Jones will be replacing as Holly!

I suspect a West End transfer announcement is soon.

THE HILLS OF CALIFORNIA Previews
 Sep 13 2024, 07:37:26 AM

I saw this last night, and I’m not really sure how to feel about it. I think it’s a pretty slight, well-crafted play that wastes its time on too much dialogue between characters that don’t matter and builds tension that never really comes to any kind of head. The performances are all fine, but the only person on the stage I came away wanting to see more of was Ophelia Lovibond, who plays the second youngest sister, Ruby. Not really sure why Laura Donnelly’s perfor

Broadway Flash said: "If the theatre is ready to go, I wonder why Gypsy is only starting previewsright before the holidays. "

There are lots of reasons this could be. The theater might not actually be ready for load-in, the cast might not be finalized, some of the cast and creatives they have finalized might not be available yet. Certainly there are other possible reasons, but it doesn’t really matter at the end of the day. It starts when it starts.

Huge, excellent news! Wonder who will be succeeding her at Encores, since - presumably - you can’t be the Artistic Director of both.
