Ya got me sonofagun. Arms up! You're right! You saw through my ruse and right to the true meaning of what I was saying:

I was actually saying that the cast of A Tale of Two Cities forcibly had sex with my eyes and ears.

You've solved the mystery and you can go home from the library now.

The hole in your logic is that you actually thought for one minute that I meant rape in a sexual manner and that I was attempting to downplay the severity of sexual rape and used that as a reason to downplay my opinion.

That's like saying someone who uses the phrase "spread like a cancer" is making light of the severity of the cancer. Or "I'm gonna kill you!" lessens the severity of murder. Get a grip.

Sonofagun, once you leave the library, how will you solve mysteries without the help of Nancy, the Hardys, and the Boxcar kids?

I hate it when people confuse the student insurrection of 1832 in Les Miserables with the actual French Revolution of A Tale of Two Cities which took place forty years prior to the events in Les Miserables. It's also interesting to note that A Tale of Two Cities was published prior to Les Miserables so any similarities in the story would have been borrowed from A Tale of Two Cities and not the other way around. I can understand arguing that the staging of the musical is similar, but the love triangle aspect set against revolution came from A Tale of Two Cities.

A Tale of Two Cities - the Novel was published prior to Les Miserables.

The musical Les Miserables was created, written and staged before the musical A Tale of Two Cities was even conceived. Regardless of Les Miserables possibly stealing from the novel ATOTC, it still was performed first.

Any comparisons therefore incited by ATOTC being adapted into a musical is their own damn fault for coming out AFTER Les Miserables.

Yes, I confess - it's all true. But Charles Dickens is to blame! He was a terrible plagiarist, don't you know? He stole the French Revolution, a little girl saying a child's prayer (that's what it was by the way - not a ballad about "heaven"!), love triangles AND guys being in prison for a really long time (you forgot that one) - all from Victor Hugo's book!

But I'm still trying to figure out what the ensemble number is in "Les Miz" that's bathed in red lighting! Anybody care to help me out?

Logan, I can't wait to see your musical! I'll make sure to bring garlic and a stake! Good night now! re: Tale of Two Cities Broadway Cast Recording))

The only one I can think of is "Lovely Ladies". "One Day More" is bathed in red, white and blue.

Dear Jill,

I'm a sophomore in college and I have written better music.

Much love.

PS - I've seen many High School productions that utilize red lighting in the "Red and Black" scene.

Thanks Cats. For some reason I'm only seeing variations of black and white lighting in my Les Miz flashbacks. But surely there were some other colors as well !

Dear B3

"I know you are - but what am I?"

Ah..youth. I remember when I was a young, passionate know-it-all who thought my opinions were absolutely incontrovertible. I thought I was pretty funny and clever too - cutting down the work of others (though not as an anonymous poster in a public forum - just in spontaneous conversation with similarly jaded know-it-all types.) As the years went by and I struggled to get my show on, I saw hundreds of other writers and shows getting produced. And as I read all the reviews - many scathing (and often clueless) - I found myself softening a bit and really developing some very valuable traits. Those would be humility and compassion. Hopefully, one day, you'll discover them too.

Much love!

B3, during my time on the board you've said many things I've agreed with and many things I haven't and I've always respected you as a poster. For you to say something as juvenile as that absolultely throws me for a loop. I hope you do make it to Broadway but I'd like to suggest you don't step on any toes on your way up.

Jill, aren't flash backs always in black and white? That's the way it is in the movies at least re: Tale of Two Cities Broadway Cast Recording

I'm looking forward to seeing the show in a few weeks and to see how the show has evolved since I saw it last year in Sarasota.

"Yep... before people (once again) made it their duty to say how much they despise the show. We get it."

And if my estimation is correct, other than Logan here, the really vocal people haven't seen the show yet.

I think the fact that you would need to go back and re-read the phrase "rape of my senses" multiple times and still find some kind of forced sexual assertion is more of a reflection on you, not me. I think your issue is less with the use of the word "rape" than its use to describe a show you're a fan of. Anyone with a mastery of the English and the ability to discern a secondary meaning of a word based on its use would be able to tell that I wasn't claiming that my senses had been forced to have sex with the cast of A Tale of Two Cities.

And thank you Eris for acknowledging that my review and opinions were based on in fact seeing the show.

"And thank you Eris for acknowledging that my review and opinions were based on in fact seeing the show."

I can respect your negative review because you actually saw the show and were able to form your own opinion. What I don't respect are the people who step all over the show with nothing to back them up other than what they've heard. And not just in regards to ATOTC but any show, book, film, etc. It's an uneducated stance to take.

I saw the show in Florida and enjoyed it. Will I enjoy it as much with the different cast and the various other changes? I don't know but I'm willing to find out.

And in regards of your use of the word "rape" - I knew exactly what you meant and your use is correct. But I also knew that your usage of it would stir the pot.

As much as I didn't like the use of the phrase "rape of the sense" I knew what the poster was saying. I don't agree with their review of the show but I am glad that someone said something negative about the show AFTER seeing it. I get the impression that a lot of the negative reviews of this show are coming from people who don't want to see it because they are convinced it is bad. If you go to a show and think going in that it is bad or it is going to suck then chances are your going to have a bad time. But, if you go in with an open mind and the thought that you want to have a good night out then you could actually enjoy the show.

I have no problem with people making negative comments about the show. I do have a problem with people making negative comments without actually seeing the show. It is just an illogical move in my mind.

I totally agree--- I think people just took the critic's reviews, and ran with them in the case of "ATOTC"-

To take it a step further, Testing, some of the people who are stepping on the show were stepping on it before it even started previews. The Florida audiences enjoyed the show amd because they're not "New York" their opinions were deemed less worthy.

I think this show will find its niche with the tourists and people who, unlike us, don't go to the theatre much. I take the train home after seeing a show and I saw a group of women fanning themselves with ATOTC playbills. I approached them and explained that I had tickets for the show and wanted to know how they felt. They RAVED about the show...absolutely RAVED. I went on to ask if they were active theatre goers and they said no. I wouldn't be surprised if tickets sales climbed with the coming tourist season.

ETA: Regarding the critics. If a critic is going to put themselves in a position of "authority" and "knowledge" only tp turn around and say that Les Miz and ATOTC deal with the same revolution then their entire review goes out the window for me.

Jill, and everybody else involved with A Tale of Two Cities,
I really enjoyed the show, and even saw it three times to date. I am so impressed with the artistic treatment of all aspects of the production, (book, music, lighting, set design). The talent was amazing, and I truly felt for the characters. I feel that it is a powerful piece, and in an attempt to get back to the original topic, I am looking forward to a Broadway cast recording and am waiting eagerly for its announcement!
