Well, most cast albums don't make any money, but I agree that it seems silly to put up money for one that's almost garanteed not to. Unless a lot of people think it's an audio version of the novel...

"I was a little bothered that they were selling the concept CD in the lobby. I imagine many people might be upset that what they purchased is different than what they saw/heard."

The people selling the Concept CD in the lobby made it more than clear that I was buying the CONCEPT ALBUM and not the Broadway Cast Recording version, and I would only hear Natalie Toro, Craig Bennett & Nick Wyman on this version of the CD.

Regadless, it doesn't look good for a cast recording, but think about it. Frank Wildhorn even makes [small] profits off of his CDs (well Pimpernel + Jekyll). But that was 10 years ago, and not anywhere near the current economic situation were in now. I'm still hoping for one still!

Me too. I agree that the cast and Jill deserves it and it would also be beneficial for the regional theatres that will eventually mount the show as I'm sure it will be very popular, but you have to be reasonable. I'm not going to get my hopes up.

"I, for one, would like to have James Barbour's versions of Sydney's songs (although I like the Sydney on the concept CD, it is nothing compared), and I know there are hundreds out there who feel the same."

I certainly do. It's unfortunate he got caught up in that legal mess, but boy, do I love that man's voice. I was lucky enough to see him as Lancelot on tour. He and Rachel York made the show for me. And the "Jane Eyre" cast CD is one of my favorites.

from a business standpoint it should not be recorded.
Why would someone produce a cd that will lose money?

For a commercial record label, it makes no sense, but many of these shows have recordings produced and paid for by the productions. It took producers years to realize that while the existence of a cast album does not guarantee future productions, the lack of a cast album almost ensures that the show will not get regional or community staging. The half-million dollar cost of doing the recording is often billed as a production expense with only a distribution arrangement with the commercial label.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

This is a show that I would definitely want on CD even if I don't make it to NYC before it closes.

I hope the rumors are true.

80% at this time of the year is not that horrible (and yes, I understand it was a Friday night)

My wife was there as well, and said it looked pretty crowded (she was actually told by one of the ushers that we know at the theatre that it was sold out last night)

That usher was lying.

Most of the people around me had ample room for a freak barrier.

Logan,
Why all the negativity? The usher wasn't "lying". And what exactly is a "freak barrier?"

Because I'm still recovering each of my senses after them being individually raped by this show last night.

A freak barrier is what I call when people/a group of people leave a chair in between them and the next person/group in a movie theater, Broadway theater, bus, subway, etc.

Oh this ought to be good: yes

I'm actually writing a show I'm going to direct for a theater festival at my university. This show scared me from writing for 2 days. Thank God I saw [title of show] last night and have killed some vampires in order to press on.

logan0215, You are far more negative about shows that you don't like than I ever would be.

I don't like Gypsy but I am not as vocal about it as you are with Two Cities.

I came into this thread and dispelled an incorrect posting that the show must be selling really well by posting information about their TDF offerings.

I had also seen the show that night so I stated the fact that it was not a sold-out performance and it was a Friday.

I was asked about my negativity toward the show and simply stated the reaction the show incited in me. I didn't come in and say I wished it closed. Can you provide the link for a thread I started as a vendetta against the show? Maybe find a 5-page dissertation I wrote about hating it on a blog somewhere? Maybe somewhere where I called someone out on liking the show based on their avatar?

But, there is a difference in saying that you didn't really like the show and it wasn't one of your favorites. To saying "it raped my senses." Saying something like that is a bit harsh. That is what I meant about your negativity being a bit over the top.

I saw the show this passed Friday. The orchestra at least was full. I was in the last row of the orchestra so I didn't get the chance to look up at the mezz.

It's also an inappropriate description given the circumstances. I took it as a deliberate jab.

First off, what circumstances? Are you saying it was insensitive to use the word rape because a fictional character's fictional sister was raped and murdered in a show based on a work of fiction? If so, wow.

Second.
rape:
1. The crime of forcing another person to submit to sex acts, especially sexual intercourse.
2. The act of seizing and carrying off by force; abduction.
3. Abusive or improper treatment; violation: a rape of justice.

A rape of my senses would most aptly be described as #3, so take your pity party somewhere else. I felt assaulted by how loud the microphones were on actors clearly not needing them (namely James Barbour who even said in the talkback that he was trained to perform without microphones: something I wish the sound technicians took into account) & my sight because I couldn't believe just how ridiculously similar the lighting and costumes were to Les Miz and the misuse of such a huge stage and proscenium leaving the show looking bare.

I was going to take the time to write a full review elsewhere, but as my opinion and choice of expression for it is being called out, I'll do so here:

If I had paid anything more than free for A Tale of Two Cities, I would have stormed the Bastille myself. Perhaps my disdain for the show is fueled by its survival in a Broadway where shows like [title of show] close after 100 performances, but I know myself enough and know that I've seen enough theater to be able to discern good from bad.

The music:

I felt as though I were stuck in "Like Father, Like Son" from AIDA or the endless "I Hope You Like It Here" songs of The Woman in White for the first 60% of the show. The songs felt like banter set to music rather than actual pieces with verses and a chorus. "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" was the first to really feel fully fleshed out (performances review late). Most of James' songs felt the same, just a decision to end them with a deafening and unending belt or a soft high note. Brandi's second act 11 o'clock(ish) number left much to be desired until her money note in the end that really blew the roof off the place.

Performances/Writing/Direction:

Due to the material, these actors deserve great props. The elderly nanny (sorry, discarded of my playbill so don't have song/characters names) tried her damdest to make her lines come off as funny, and they felt like they were supposed to be funny, but just were not. Barbour resorted to stock, modern sarcastic humor in his portrayal which really took me out of the period of the piece. His main talent was displayed in execution of songs. He certainly does not need a microphone for his belting songs (which were the majority) and ended up feeling like they were being pounded into my head. Not to nitpick, but the little girl sounded Australian. She didn't drop the accent so good on her, but my friend and I snickered every time she said Sydney. Aaron was in great voice though not given much to do. I'd much prefer seeing him storm the barricade. Brandi is breathtakingly beautiful but her character simply pissed my friend and I off. Her weigning from one man to the other was both predictable and obnoxious at the same time.

The staging was odd and uneven. The stage at the Hirschfeld is so large and the set pieces, although inventive, were not executed well. With those two large pieces, the stage still felt empty. When the "real" gunshot went off during one of the scenes and then the character ended up living anyway, my friend and I looked at each other like "did they just need to scare us to keep us awake at this point?" It just felt like they were trying to get everything that Les Miz had into this production. Large ensemble number bathed in red lighting; stomping and starting a revolution where intermission should be? Check. Little girl ballad about heaven? Check. Love triangle? Check. French revolution? Double check.

I feel like anyone who says this show isn't ripped off of Les Miz is simply in denial and rather naive. Listening to the cast at the talkback trying to justify it by saying "well, some of the great Leonard Bernstein and Comden & Green musicals were set in WWII, do people question them being the same?" was just sad. It isn't a coincidence that this show premiered hot on the heels of a "revival" of Les Miz and uses a huge majority of the narrative devices employed in that show. And poorly I'd add.

Its funny too as I don't count myself as a huge fan of Les Miz. I saw it as a Jr in high school and sort of loathed it but then found myself growing in interest of it in time for the latest revival and gave it another shot. I can't say I listen to it regularly, but could hum you a tune or so from it. I simply cannot say the same for this production.

EDIT: And if a Broadway professional doesn't want to work with me because I have a clear and articulated review of a show I despised and they went to the point of identifying me in order to block that employment, so be it. I'd rather stand by my opinions. I don't eat **** to get a job.

I was talking with one of the cast members before the show on Friday night. She and I were laughing at the number of people who refuse to see them as two different shows. She even went so far to say as it was a different french revolution. And most people who see Les Miserables confuse the revolution that goes on in that with the actual french revolution that happens in Two Cities. I agree with her that people are naive when it comes to seeing this show. I feel that the real naive ones are the ones who refuse to look at it as its own work. And that all the mega musicals of the 80's had aspects that were similar to one another.

The level of denial in this thread baffles me. The show won't make it past the winter and the score should be forgotten and go unrecorded (all bootlegs should be burned... that's what I did with mine).
