Er, why do you say so? I thought the costume design is entirely functional- not exceptional, surely, but does the job without calling attention to itself.

Posted: 4/26/19 at 2:50pmThe costume design is probably the most competently designed aspect of the show. The set looked like it was from a cruise ship production. I still think this was totally the wrong theatre. That stage is huge and it really does swallow up the show. I really think they just approached this show wrong. I mean, everything almost works. The cast is phenomenal, the book is funny, and there's some good music in there. I think they just went too big, flashy, and big broadway with it. It's a decent, fun show, but I also think it could be much better.

The first blue dress is boring, ill-fitting and wrong for the star’s first entrance. You’re right - I find Ivey’s designs usually always safe and calling very little attention to themselves. I think costumes for shows need a bit more than that.

I recall from Chicago thinking the bar and Michael’s apartment were well done, and the latter in particular being highly detailed.
