I don't like these kind of threads. You haven't seen the show and can't form an opinion. I admit the history of this show is quite laughable, but this is just...rude. Respect what people dedicate their time to. Regardless of the budget.

Why should people respect something that's done nothing to be respected? When something happens with it that's WORTHY of respect, then maybe, but why should anyone respect something that's just wasting money at this point?

But actually, it isn't wasting OUR money or affecting us. At least not until it opens and the show is good or bad and we can say it was worth it or a waste of our money.

Oh, honestly, Mary Sue Ellen - if you put out a press release, people get to express their opinion. In this case, opinion is based on:
1) Familiarity with the Spiderman myth/history/movies
2) Familiarity with Julie Taymor's work
3) Familiarity with the work of Bono & The Edge
4) Familiarity with the long well-reported history of the financial goofs associated with this project

No one is saying that they know the future; but you can form an opinion on a possible/probable outcome based on studying history. You may be proven wrong, but that's no reason to never express an opinion.

Newintown, based on your list and your rules for forming an opinion, numbers 1-3 should inspire a great deal of positivity for this project, as Spider-Man is one of the most popular, successful comics in America; Julie Taymor is one of the country's (and the world's) most innovative and exciting visionary directors; and U2 is one of the world's bestselling music groups (and has been for over 20 years).

Sure, if you want to be that reductive about it. You could also have said in 1983, "Doonesbury will be a great work because the comic strip is popular, Garry Trudeau is a Pulitzer winner and Oscar nominee, Liz Swados is one of the theatre's most innovative composers, and director Jacques Levy directed the smash hit Oh! Calcutta!" But you wouldn't be proved prescient.

So Spiderman is popular? Many bad shows are based on popular material. You like Taymor? Good. I think she doesn't know what to do with text or human beings, and found Juan Darien to be interminable. U2 is successful - yes, but not at creating theatrical songs about situation and character.

None of this means they will fail (although the frequently reported financial data that says they need to sell out at full price for five years to break even suggests they may), it also doesn't mean that the quality of the work will be universally praised.

I don't know if it's going to be good or bad, but it's not worthy of any sort of respect until it earns it. To say that it deserves to be respected just because people put time into it seems asinine.

In your opinion. Personally, I kind of agree with some of the things you said, but that doesn't mean everyone does. Someone who never liked Spider-Man comics, hates U2's music, and didn't like The Lion King or Across the Universe would take those three points as negative.

I wasn't talking about respect, really.
