SPIDER-MAN Begins Rehearsal?
 Jul 23 2010, 12:32:30 PM
Newintown, based on your list and your rules for forming an opinion, numbers 1-3 should inspire a great deal of positivity for this project, as Spider-Man is one of the most popular, successful comics in America; Julie Taymor is one of the country's (and the world's) most innovative and exciting visionary directors; and U2 is one of the world's bestselling music groups (and has been for over 20 years).

What is with all of this bile directed at Taymor? She is one of the hardest-working, innovative directors in the world. I would give anything to sit in on one of her rehearsals. I'm not sure what's going to come of this Spider-Man musical, but her reputation is based on solid, beautiful work with a clear sense of vision.

DC's ability to use the names for their own comics and their ability to license the property to other media are two completely different legal issues.

The biggest issue with the performance was the sound levels. It was like no one told the sound guy that there was a hip hop part of the song in the middle that had nothing to do with the lyrical part from the beginning. Which of course featured THE GUY WHO WROTE THE SHOW and tells the story of the song. Because we couldn't hear Lin-Manuel or any of the others, the song seemed worthless.
Will SUPERMAN battle SPIDER-MAN on Broadway?

What is not being considered here is that this would not simply be a direct transfer to NY for the fall. It's not like this show is just going to pick up and move to some empty theatre on Broadway. There is still much work to be done on the new book and songs before it's ready for Broadway, at the admission of the current production team (and the majority of the critics). They have to find major financing and secure real estate (which is in short supply on the Great White Way), as well as recast

Fine, guys. I was wrong. This is a brilliant piece of theatre, probably the best musical ever written. I hope it plays in NYC with the current cast and script intact. And when it does, I can't wait to hear what Brantley, Isherwood, and Feingold think of it.

Tourboi, the name is Director1971. If you're going to gloat unnecessarily, get it right.

And this article does nothing but say the Dallas team sure would like for the show to go to Broadway, which is nothing more than what they've been saying for months. But it takes more than that to actually DO it.

And, to quote from the Dallas Observer article about the show's evolution:

"When I asked a DC spokesman if there was anyone at the company to whom I could speak about this

And the worst thing that I did in this discourse was to provide an alternate, LOCAL viewpoint to many of the questions that were being raised about the show and its future. And everything that I have claimed was backed up by verified news sources.

A few corrections.

Did I only post bad reviews? No. I posted ALL of the reviews that have been printed, with the exception of the Dallas Observer one, and that was because someone else beat me to the punch.

I must have missed the official announcement that they have been given permission to pursue transferring the show. Could you provide a link to it?

I do not have any kind of a grudge against the Theater Center. But I do think that they could use their considerable r

To clarify my previous message, it is my understanding that DC requested that the DTC production refrain from using Lex and other characters not originally licensed for the 1966 musical after a spate of public press events by the theater company in which they described the changes they were planning on making to the script, as well as a story or two published about the changes on Playbill.com. DC would have the right to be suspicious of this production on those grounds alone, since it appears Ag

However, in the case of this production, where they wrote the script with Lex Luthor, Toyman, etc., in mind, and then simply changed the names when DC forbade them from using those iconic characters, there is definitely some legal follow-up that would need to be done by DC's reps, I would expect. Particularly when it comes to the minor villains and their costumes - if someone is now "Jack-in-the-Box" rather than "Toyman," but still wears a costume similar to Toyman's, that is still within the re

ObiHave, I honestly think that DC wishes this show had never been made and that it would disappear forever, which is why I don't think this new version will go anywhere after it closes in July. In the larger scheme of things, it severely undermines the Superman brand by turning the character into a joke. But I think the Spider-Man musical is more reason for them to limit the show, rather than give it more freedom and access.

I will freely admit, I cannot stand the original 1966 musical,

Sorry for the knee-jerk reaction, Scary, but one of the things that has prevented me from moving back to NYC is the unbearable snide provincialism that I experienced there on a regular basis when I did live there and that I have seen emerge in some of my friends. I object to the idea that NYC is the center of all things cultural and artistic in the US/world and that the opinions of the remaining 99.5% of the country don't really matter.

But don't dismiss our local critics - they are ver

Why, exactly, is Variety "the review that counts the most"?
