I've always found it amusing how Elphaba is always said to sing the highest notes when the notes themselves aren't high at all. Take "Defying Gravity," for example, it is always said to include a really hard to sing, high note ending. If that's high, then must suck to be those who thinks so cause surely they can't sing to save their lives, lol.

Nobody seems to take into account the thing required to make those notes soar and give the illusion that their high as all hell: projection. Actresses who play the role are usually great at projecting their voices and making them fill auditoriums.

My favorite is reading BBW people opine over these movie roles saying things like "I don't think she could pull it off." The truth of the matter is most of these films cannot be green-lit without A-list talent signed. Hollywood isn't exactly about "art" and "talent" when you look the potential risk a multi-million dollar movie.

Secondly most of these roles are cartoonish to begin with. Wicked may have some "difficult-ish" songs but the roles are very two-dimensional. Any flavor-of-the-month Rebbeca Blacks of the world could "pull it off."

The luxury Wicked has is it's hit status. Wicked will "make" money even if they cast a nobody in the lead role (but will need Justin Bieber as Fiyero). Something tells me it's going to be something like a Hathaway/Amanda Seyfried. Idina and Kristen will get cameos. If they play there cards right, this could be a pretty big hit especially holiday/Oscar time.

But let's not fool ourselves here, Wicked is not serious subject matter.

PositivelyEmerald, I was just coming to throw Samantha Barks into the mix... depending on Les Mis, she could be a huge possibility.

finebydesign,
I disagree with you on many levels. Just because you don't find them three dimensional does not mean they are. Many people, like myself, would argue that.

Jennifer Hudson as Wicked Movie's Elphaba

why is everyone acting like we already don't know Anne Hathaway is getting the role?

I love Anne Hathaway a lot, and I think she's ridiculously talented, but I don't think this would be a good fit for her.

Guys....come on! It's pretty obvious that Samantha Barks will play Elphaba, especially since Les Miserables will be a very career-changing movie for her.

All of the actresses that you all suggested are either too old and/or too unknown. By the time Les Mis comes out, Samantha will be famous AND she's age appropriate for the role. There's barely any Hollywood actress who can really SING, and Samantha is a very strong singer.

Oh Anna can sing, oh can she REALLY sing and STRONGLY, the girl was nominated for a Tony age 12 in her Broadway debut. And she's is indeed the right age and is a long way from being to old. And Anna will still be more famous than Samantha even after Les Miz

Maybe Babs will consider the role of Elphaba after coming off her stellar turn as Rose!

That's all fine and dandy, but they would want someone famous to play Elphaba, and Anna Kendrick is not famous. To be honest, I didn't even know who Anna Kendrick was until 2 minutes ago, so I looked her up on google, and haha....she's from the Twilight films lol! Nope, Anna is definitely not considered famous. Twilight may be a huge franchise, but Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are the only ones who gets real attention from those films.

I hardly call getting nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe not famous. You need to get out more, she's in high demand, critically hailed again and again and again, and she's busy busy busy with big film roles she was hand picked for.

Up in the Air? Never saw the film. Just because I never saw it doesn't mean I live under a rock. That was like 2 or 3 years ago, and she hasn't done anything outstanding since then. Just because she was nominated for an Oscar or GG for one role years ago, doesn't automatically make her a household name that everyone is familiar with.

"Maybe Babs will consider the role of Elphaba after coming off her stellar turn as Rose!"

She'll be 80 by then and probably take tempos about about half that number (40 BPMs). That's one LOOOONG WICKED movie, plus the new Alan and Marilyn Bergman songs augmented to the Schwartz originals.

You're saying Anna does not have the star power to be cast, even with major film credits and high honors for her work, but Samantha does with hypothetical hype in a movie that hasn't come out yet?

And just because you think that Les Miserables will make Samantha Barks a huge mega-star doesn't automatically mean that is going to happen either. I recall everyone proclaiming what a huge career Phantom was going to create for Emmy Rossum before the movie opened, and yet I'm sure that nowadays if you mention Emmy Rossum many people would give you the same blank stare that you are implying that you got when Anna Kendrick was mentioned.

Anna's SIX (yes, six) film projects, soon to be at a theatre near you:

End of Watch (starring role opposite Jake Gyllenhaal)

Pitch Perfect (leading role, and she sings in it, in a cast that includes Elizabeth Banks, Alexis Knapp, Brittany Snow, Rebel Wilson, and Skylar Astin)

The Company You Keep (ensemble film, directed by Robert Redford, featuring Redford, Shia LeBeouf, Julie Christie, Sam Elliott, Anna Kendrick, Susan Sarandon, Terrence Howard, Chris Cooper, and Stanley Tucci)

Rapturepalooza (leading role)

Get a Job (starring role in a cast that also features Marcia Gay Harden)

Drinking Buddies (starring role)

Well beltingbaritone, that was before I knew Anna was "famous", since I never saw Up in the Air or heard of this girl until today. And this is coming from someone who reads magazines, gossip blogs, etc on my spare time. Now since I'm informed with her success, I think she might have a chance to be considered for the part, that is if she even wants to play Elphaba at all. However, I do feel someone here is overestimating her fame just a bit. Her fame peaked a couple of years ago, and it's decreasing due to the films she decided to do. The Twilight franchise is not helping her at all. You can't expect everyone to know who she is.

As for Samantha, it seems like the Les Mis movie will be a guaranteed hit. The teaser has gotten a positive response, it's directed by an Oscar winning director, the film contains a ton of talented celebrities, and it's a big budget movie based on one of the greatest musicals of all time. So I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes successful, which would make Samantha famous and critically-praised. It's a possibility since she plays an interesting, emotional character that anyone can relate to. So I wouldn't be surprised if they chose Samantha to play Elphaba at the highest point in her career.

Noted BroadwayStar4 (keeping up wit the them of bolding our names). I'm also sure Samantha will be fantastic, especially judging by her performance in the 25th Anniversary concert. However, this doesn't diminish Anna Kendrick's presence in the industry, both with past films and upcoming films. Best12bars impressive list doesn't even take into account the films she has smaller roles in.
