Ever since the other day when I posted on the Encores thread that I thought Sutton Foster would be a good choice to do the show I've been listening to it non stop. Get Patti or Carol in there as the Queen and Cheyenne as Prince Dauntless and you'll get a good audience, I think.
It's been almost 15 years since the last one (WOW) and it's the kind of show that usually does well, isn't it?
I am legit all over Patti or Carol as the Queen. AAA+++, Jordan.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

It might be a little on the small side, but I can still think it's a good idea.
I actually also like the idea of Beth Leavel as the Queen.

^ a pearl clutching gasp or one of recognition of total brilliance?

although Foster would be charming and the show could be cast to high hell, this high school theatre staple has merely an above average book and a lame score. Let it stay dead.
and honestly, what kinda kids these day care about the princess and the pea?
I do have to say that Kathleen Marshall's much edited movie is delightful though, well-cast and entertaining. it works better as such a 90 minute distraction than a full 2 hour musical with lame songs like "Very Soft Shoes"
The score to MATTRESS is much better than some of the crap people are writing nowadays.
I'd take a revival of this to the upcoming Addams Family.

The show is LOW comedy akin to "Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." I'd get Lea Delaria instead of Foster who was great in the 42nd Street Moon production in 2005. I couldn't picture Carol Burnett in her prime(as well as the creators original choice Nancy Walker) playing any of Foster's roles (eh maybe SHREK) anymore than I can see Sutton as Winifred or Hildy. The role calls for a loud larger than life overpowering yet lovable buffoon. Sarah Jessica Parker didn't fit that bill either.
I love the recording with Lewis Cleale, SJP, Krakowsky, etc.

Leavel as Queen? Check Cheyenne as Harry? Check Borle as Dauntless? CHECK Sutton as Fred? Check
But I don't think this is a huge attention getter. It's between a rock and a hard place: children's theatre story and dealing with pre marital sex/pregnancy. I know it's not ground breaking or edgy....but it's not exactly KID friendly.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

mattress shouldn't be revived forthe same reason Funny Girl shouldn't be revived. Broadway lacks that bigger-than-life comedienne with a powerful voice.
