Hello all!

I'm putting together a little musical review and need your help.

What are your favorite Broadway Musical Opening numbers contemporary or classic?

While were at it what about favorite Act One Finales and Act Two opening numbers?

Listen to track number 2 on the "FROGS" cast recording.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Sunday in the Park With George- the opener becomes over-the-top wonderful when you actually see it staged, but the Act One closer, "Sunday," is an absolute stunner even if you're just listening. "A Little Priest" is a great Act One closer, as well.

"there you are" from the mystery of Edwin drood is a wondeful opening number, but i agree with the Capn' trk 2 of the frogs is fantastic and really cute for a show like that... so cute infact that it was used as the opening number for Putting it Together.

The opening number in Into the Woods is right up there for me.

Gotta put in a vote for "Four Jews in a Room Bitching" from Falsettos also.

You shouldn't get flamed, Kushnier. Your opinion is just a valid as anyone elses.

Another 'Into the Woods' vote. I just love it went you hear those first few chords and the words 'I wish' - WOW! I may be biased because I played the Baker for a production in Liverpool, England. Everytime I hear the chords it takes me back.

The Ragtime opening is amazing, as is Sweeney Todd.

I'd also say Side Show starts in a similarly strong fashion (Come Look at the Freaks)...which could work really well for a cabaret show. =)

I also vote "Into the Woods"

If you're thinking more of an old school Broadway type opening number, "Another Openin', Another Show" from "Kiss Me, Kate" is fun.

I too vote for Into the Woods. I also think Cabaret's opening is brilliant. It sets the mood for the entire show so perfectly.

I think there was a thread a couple of weeks ago of people talking about act one closers -- I remember One Day More and Little Priest more or less split the vote with Defying Gravity and La Vie Boheme making strong showings.

For Act One openers -- "OH What a Beautiful Morning," "The Carousel Waltz," "Aquarius," the original opening of Nine with the Lalas....

Act Two openers -- "God That's Good" from Sweeney is the only one that really comes to mind. I think a lot of shows try not to do huge opening numbers for the second act to give the audience a chance to sit back down and get into the show again.

In Tommy Tune's staging, the opening of "Grand Hotel" was about as flawless an opening number as you can get. Was also a big fan of the opening of "Titanic" although I pretty much hated everything that followed... I second the opening of "Ragtime" as well.

I love the opening scene for Light In The Piazza (both 'Overture' & 'Statues and Stories') - When Clara first appears on stage amidst the bustling leaves against the backdrop of sky, singing her stunning, wordless melody... It's magical...
And then 'Statues and Stories' is a lovely, charming song that builds in intensity and sets the tone for the show beautifully.

Thoroughly Modern Millie has a fun opening number.

A Chorus Line is good if you want to throw in a dance opening number.

Incredible how mired we are in modern musicals!
The act one opening of My Fair Lady -- "Why Can't The English," Camelot -- "I Wonder What the King Is Doing Tonight," The Sound of Music...ummmm....
The West Side Story opening through the Jet Song if you're really ambitious.

If you're looking for overtures, there are two that stand head and shoulders over everything else: Gypsy and Candide.

I have to say I agree with the poster who mentioned the opening of Grand Hotel...

I can't believe no one (including me) has mentioned Tradition from Fiddler yet either...

CHICAGO - ALL THAT JAZZ.

Is there really any contest? ATJ is usually considered by the critics and fans one of the best opening numbers EVER.

I put in my vote for "Wilkommen" from Cabaret (as a matter of fact, that's the opening number to my musical revue show). It's fun cuz when you're introducing the "Cabaret girls" and "Cabaret boys" you can say whatever you want about them (cuz the original lyrics are not exactly family friendly).

i second RENT the opening number gets you pumped up for the rest of the show. As for Act I Finale i think "Astonishing" was pretty incredible. I also have to say I think "Seasons of Love" is a pretty powerful Act II opening number. thats my two cents :)

I'm kind of a sweat pant, t-shirt, no make-up type of girl. So once a year, I can get spiffy. Sutton Foster :)
