I would be really happy if this was considered. I thought this was one of the best things I saw in 2017 and I was hoping that it would transfer in at some point.
I thought COST OF LIVING was the best play I saw last year and explored issues of disability and class that most theatrical works hardly touch. Its win makes perfect sense to me.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
-John Guare, Landscape of the Body
Having finally gotten around to reading COST OF LIVING, I am honestly shocked that it won. I am all for plays that don't explain everything, but it feels like I read an unfinished script. I am also glad that this play provides two opportunities for disabled actors, but I wish it were in service of a better show. Maybe it plays better on stage, but now I'm slightly more miffed that IF I FORGET by Steven Levenson wasn't even considered.
