Too early to predict oscar noms for RENT. Don't know the competition. Don't know how the public/media will take it.
Films get overlooked. Films get too much attention and are not worthy of it. Films get nominated and deserve it, films get nominated and don't deserve it.
All opinion, of course.

Seriously, if you could see the ridiculously happy grin on my face right now...... The apocolypse could hit at this very moment and I'd still die smiling absurdly. They all look amazing and it looks like they haven't aged a day since 1996. I actually really like the new costumes (and I'm still getting used to the slightly different look they are giving Mimi. Much less badass then Daphne and her leather and fishnets. It works but I'm still adjusting. :-P) And of course I'm happy to see Mark's signature sweater is in the movie. 
Ahhh they all look so incredible and I'm so excited to see the clips tonight! OK, my rant is over. *bows out of room*
I wanted to get something that an "ex"-junkie like him would really appreciate and cherish....it's a brick of heroin shaped like a heart.

Well, in terms of the Oscars, RENT *does* have a few things going for it in terms of Buzz:
A major advantage is a November release. Close to the end of the year - a prime time for Oscar buzz.
It's appealing to a wide range of adult audiences. It's an adult show, now to be an adult film. It'll be VERY appealing to teenagers. It will make its money back.
No doubt about it, Oscar buzz will be generated. But actually getting nominations is another thing.
I think THE PRODUCERS is the musical this year which won't get too many nominations. If any. I'd say RENT has a better chance. We'll see...

Posted: 5/19/05 at 7:58pmAgreed. I'll be barricaded in my bedroom, watching the clips over and over and over again if anyone needs me. :-P And yeah, I'm really liking Adam's long hair now. And the pics of him dancing up on the tables with Jesse made me laugh so hard. That and the pic of the cast holding Anthony up off the table while he's lying on his back. Hilarious.

Christopher Columbus, though like Joel Schumacher is not a director who's work is respected by Hollywood. Critics were ready to slam PHANTOM before it even opened because of Joel's involvement, and I fear many will do the same with RENT because of Columbus. I think THE PRODUCERS is going to be the musical movie darling of the year...

Posted: 5/19/05 at 8:01pmHeh, that was awesome! The set for La Vie Boheme, looks quite appropriate, and it was so great to see Anthony back in well another Mark costume(in addition to in NY). Adam was wonderful to see, and Jesse seems like such a doll. Rosario seems so moved and into it, that's great. And her and Wilson's dancing looked great. His costume was similar, just the leggings/tights seemed different. The short bit of Seasons of Love looked awesome, as did the little bits and pieces of Will I? and I'll Cover You. Gah, I'm soo happy right now!

Rent will have certain advantages in awards I hope. The fact that it will be in the musical/comedy category in the Golden Globes makes me think it has a good shot at at least several nominations, possibly a couple of wins, which could help give it more Oscar buzz.
I do agree about Chris Columbus, however the truth is Rent is certainly more critically acclaimed than Phantom, and critics like Jonathan Larson more than Andrew Lloyd Webber. I hope it won't stifle reviews, but it very well could.
I really think the ending is the one thing going against it. I have a feeling the happy ending is going to be slammed my critics. However, you just can't change that, so if they have a problem, too bad.
I certainly think the Producers will be the darling in terms of box office gross, but given the content I still think Rent has a better chance at awards.

Emcee, I somehow missed that bit that's now in your signature. *Shakes head* Jerk.
Anyone else think that LVB sounds and looks too slow? Even so, I hyperventilated every time they showed teaser clips and the actual segment.
Unrelated- I think The Producers is vastly overrated. Fun, but not spectacular.
