Which do your prefer Original London Cast or the Movie Soundtrack? I have the Movie soundtrack and I love it. For one you can understand what they are saying better than on the OLC album. But I have thought about buying it the OLC as well?
I like Gerard Butler better than Crawford (I know, I know) but I don't feel strongly one way or the other about Rossum or Brightman. Brightman obviously has a better, stronger voice, but neither of them do it for me.
I don't really ever listen to this show, but if I did, I'd be likely to put on the soundtrack.
"If you are going to do something, do it well. And leave something witchy."-Charlie Manson
I prefer Hugh Panaro also. and I think Megan Starr Levitt was the best Christine. Rebecca "cant annunciate to save her life" Pitcher is not the best, in my opinion. unless she's taken some speech classes since I last saw her...
Really? People like the movie cast better? I think I may have lost much hope for the youth of America. I don't really like Sarah Brightman or Michael Crawford... but the album is a touchstone... a classic.
Movie soundtrack all the way (shocking right?) I agree Gerry on there is sexy as hell. I think he does a great singing job of Point of No Return and man he just gives me goosebumps on everything else. When I have nothing better to do, I find myself rolled up in my bed with either Music of the Night or Point of No Return playing on my headphones...entering my ears...I feel so warm and cozy and...err, I may be on the verge of an overshare
I actually like most of the rest as well. The only Raoul I've liked vocally more than Patrick is Michael Ball. And Sarah...I mean she has a great voice, but I can't stand her over vibrato. Emmy's voice may not be as powerful, but it's just...more nicer sounding on the ears.
And then when you listen to "Down Once More" and the music starts for when they kiss...you get warm all over again, not something that happens on the OLC *le sigh*
ETA: I love the R's too. It's the little bit of his Scottish accent that comes through in his singing. Gah.
"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli
Find a bootleg of the show when it was in Melbourne if you can. Anthony Warlow and Marina Prior are the only two actors who have ever made me actually LIKE PotO.
"You're the worst thing to happen to musical theatre since Andrew Lloyd Webber!" --Family Guy
"Shut up! It's been 29 years!!!" --the incomparable Patti LuPone in her MUCH DESERVED Tony acceptance speech for Gypsy.
Kitzy's Avatar du Jour: Kitzy as Little Red Ridinghood in her college's production of "Into the Woods"
Theateraddict, the 2-disc movie soundtrack is just as complete as the OLC.

Now granted I know obviously Phantom of the Opera is not an opera, but still...the Phantom is supposed to be teaching Christine to sing opera. While I can understand how people can like Butler's style better, I just don't think it fits with the story (even though I am not a huge fan of Crawford's either). I have heard Phantoms on stage who I much prefer. As for Emmy's, same. Again I can understand how you can like her style better (I do agree she has a sweet, pure quality) but let's be honest. She would have been booed off the opera stage in 19th century Paris. Brightman would've too probably. And if Brightman were to be booed for not being "good enough," Emmy without a doubt would've been too.
Arghh! Grammar pet peeve #1: your vs you're. "Your" is a possessive pronoun. "You're" is the contraction of "you are."

I have the one disc movie soundtrack and I'm thinking of getting the OLC. Should I buy the OLC or buy the 2-disc movie soundtrack which contains all of the songs I already own?
Umm kaboodles, if we're discussing which CD to buy, wouldn't we want the one we prefer, not the one that fits the story better?
I do agree the standing ovation for Emmy would never have happened. But Schumaker wanted that style for the Phantom in the movie. Gerry delivered the vocal tracks Joel wanted.
