Re: New Hadestown Casting

SisterGeorge said: "How was Paulo Szot in the role? He just sang "His Kiss..." magnificently at 54 Below. Actually, his whole set was terrific, marred only slightly by a jittery Kate Baldwin who joined him on a couple of duets."

I adored him in the role and would welcome him back. He doesn't have the menace that some of the other Hades have, but he was so slimy that he made for a fantastic villain.

Re: New Hadestown Casting

To me, this is one of those situations where a mistake was made and they corrected it quickly. Live and learn. No one besides Segers needs to get fired over it.

Re: New Hadestown Casting

Hi. I’ve been away from the Broadway scene for a while (finances), but still getting email updates on this thread. I’m glad he’s gone, but wondering why there wasn’t more uproar (I know there was some, but she still did her run, I believe) about Ani’s views (which were heartbreaking for someone like me who was a fan and considered her a queer icon). Was the lesser uproar due to her past identifying as a part of the rainbow, because her comments weren’t as consistent & emphatic, because she was more famous or a little bit of all of the above?

Re: New Hadestown Casting

Ani DiFranco’s statements were substantially more measured and I wouldn’t really call them explicitly transphobic, per se. She also has a pretty long history of activism.

Segers’ videos are explicitly, egregiously sexist and transphobic. Things that would anybody fired from any job that isn’t in the Trump administration,

It’s not a big role. Unless you need to work, why would anybody WANT to do it?

Re: New Hadestown Casting

ARC Casting has announced that it parted ways with casting director Duncan Stewart effective immediately --- which is strange, since Duncan announced on the same day as the HADESTOWN debacle that he had launched his own casting firm, "Define Casting," and was leaving ARC. Maybe he had intended to stay on in a consulting or transitional role with ARC, but this feels like an unnecessary social media post for the sake of ARC attempting to look good.

(I don't know if the HADESTOWN account was planned to remain with ARC or was transitioning to Duncan's new company, or if that is going to change now...my assumption is he was planning to take Hadestown with him.)

Whitley Theatrical is the credited casting office for Hadestown, though (though they notably did not share this casting announcement unlike previous ones).

Tbf, Duncan was effectively fired/forced to leave from Whitley... so him being forced out of ARC a few years later is no surprise...

That was quick. I wonder if he auditioned recently but got rejected or placed on the back burner for future casting. Anyways, brilliant choice!

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Sorry, I got my Stewart vs Whitley shows mixed up!

In that case, I don't know what this is related to. But it's still odd that they'd make this announcement after he already announced he was leaving, unless something else is brewing.

Re: New Hadestown Casting

ARC does have Hadestown on their site, so I don’t know if they partner with Whitley or something as a talent sourcer or something? Whitley is a fairly small office.

Tom Kirdahy is a producer of Ragtime and Hadestown. Him or his associates probably just phoned up Davis or his agent knowing he can jump right in.

Re: New Hadestown Casting

I'm sure Ben Davis has auditioned before for the role, and casting directors/producers keep people in their archives for this purpose - sometimes the moment isn't right, and then suddenly the moment IS right. They probably avail-checked some past auditionees over the weekend and Davis's schedule was clear (or clearable).

Davis is an amazingly talented performer, but boy does he have some skeletons in his closet…

He is going from Caissie Levy’s husband in Ragtime to Amber Iman’s husband in Hadestown in a few weeks. For a longtime working actor, this has got to be a whirlwind. But opportunities can come along.

It's no secret that Ben Davis primarily dates women in their 20s-30s (he's 51). Some people on the internet have a problem with so-called age gaps.

To my knowledge he's known to be nice and easy to work with. He co-parents a dog with his ex, the Broadway performer Mikaela Renfrow, which they both post about regularly. He works enough that if there were any actual skeletons in his closet, they would have been unearthed long ago: this will be his fifth Broadway show of the past decade (plus lots of regional and concert and Off-Bway credits).

And before Ragtime, he was Cameron Loyal’s gay lover in HEATHERS 😆

Also, here’s a hint of “Songbird” and…*Sillabub faint*
