Just for a refreshing change - I'd like to see the actual BEST MUSICAL get the win. And from what I've seen and heard, that's Billy Elliot. Whether the show 'needs' it or not shouldn't be a consideration.

I know it's incredibly boring to say that BILLY ELLIOT has this in the bag.
But it's true. People love it that much. 9 TO 5 has been described as "a good, workmanlike show," ROCK OF AGES has no brain, [TITLE OF SHOW] is a love-it-or-hate-it show, THE STORY OF MY LIFE doesn't look to catch real, BILLY ELLIOT-level fire (except for the performances), SHREK is a corporate machine, 13 doesn't have an audience beyond its teenager demo, and TALE OF TWO CITIES is lousy.
And people love BILLY ELLIOT that much.
"Y'know, I think Bertolt Brecht was rolling in his grave."
-Nellie McKay on the 2006 Broadway production of The Threepenny Opera, in which she played Polly Peachum
BE definitely doesn't have it "in the bag". 9 to 5 has a great many advantages over BE. It could go to either one, but I think it's gonna be 9 to 5. :)
I love BILLY ELLIOT and have yet to see 9 to 5 (but I have tickets) but from what I hear 9 to 5 may steal the TONY.

[TOS] will get a Nom especially if they reopen in April like it is rumoured
I have heard no such rumours, unless by posting this you are trying to start one.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks." Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
There is absolutely NO way that "Billy Elliott" has this in the bag. 9 TO 5 is extremely capable of not only stealing it, but simply being the best musical. I know. Such a strange concept.
"Billy" is so overrated.
Also, don't count out the underdogs for a Tony upset. you never know.
either way... I found it obnoxious that you state it to be a fact. Completely false. That's just hopeful thinking.
I gotta say I would be shocked if [tos] gets a nom. It died. What would the Tonys be patting them on the back for? Creating something nobody wanted to see?
"I gotta say I would be shocked if [tos] gets a nom. It died. What would the Tonys be patting them on the back for? Creating something nobody wanted to see?"
That's an exceptionally stupid statement.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
I can't believe that [tos] would reopen. In this economy, who is going to put up money to re-open a show that couldn't make a go of it first time around? That's totally beating a dead horse.
But, hypothetically speaking, if [tos] were to reopen, would it then be eligible for both best musical and best revival of a musical?
I'm no quite sure if Rock of Ages will get nominated, the musical numbers are fun, but other than that...the show is complete crap. No Brian, No Wit, Little Originality, it's pretty much garbage. Then again...so was crybaby

I can't help but think that, in lieu of the present economy, a stronger eye than usual will be placed on what will look good on TV. The strongest contenders for the actual award (in my opinion only, of course), BILLY and 9 TO 5, will get nominated but SHREK and ROCK OF AGES have good chances of snagging noms over the less TV-friendly (tos) and STORY OF MY LIFE.
I am a big fan of nominating the best of the best, but in this economy, I think they'll try to help Broadway out in general and try to rake in the bucks, i.e. Shrek and ROA.

Yes, as Pianolin said, it has not only been rumored many times in many places, but said outright by the cast at least three times I can think of that they planned to return in April. Whether they can pull it off or not is another matter.
"But, hypothetically speaking, if [tos] were to reopen, would it then be eligible for both best musical and best revival of a musical?"
No, because there's a time frame issue. I believe it has to be closed for three years, otherwise it's not a revival but a return engagement. But that would be funny.
I doubt it will make it by april 30th, and not to mention that people weren't a big fan of most of its changes in DC.
