Matt Doyle from Bye Bye Birdie wrote today:

"My family is at the show. Today is the first day my grandpa will ever hear me sing! He was deaf and recently recieved a cochlear ear implant."

That's so nice!

Anyone who makes rude comments about that is heartless. That has to be such a huge deal for Matt. And his grandfather. It hits close to home because my grandmother never got to see me perform on stage (she got cancer and was unable to make it to my shows), so I can understand how happy this must make the both of them.

I'm all welled up. That's so sweet.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

AWWWWW <3 That is so incredibly special! re: Matt Doyle's sweet tweet

I don't need a life that's normal. That's way too far away. But something next to normal would be okay. Something next to normal is what I'd like to try. Close enough to normal to get by.

What a wonderful moment that must have been. I'm sure his grandfather was overly impressed with Matt's talent.

Although...it's a shame he also has to hear many of the rest of that cast sing...

Aw! That's so exciting!

"You have two kinds of shows on Broadway – revivals and the same kind of musicals over and over again, all spectacles. You get your tickets for The Lion King a year in advance, and essentially a family... pass on to their children the idea that that's what the theater is – a spectacular musical you see once a year, a stage version of a movie. It has nothing to do with theater at all. It has to do with seeing what is familiar.... I don't think the theatre will die per se, but it's never going to be what it was.... It's a tourist attraction." Stephen Sondheim
