Suellengay - the characters age significantly during the play so you either have young people with shoe polish in their hair playing 40 year oldsfor 2/3 of the play or you suspend disbelief for the first scene. Burton/Andrews/Goulet were all well past their teens in the original production.

With all due respect to Ms. Drescher, the accent gives me the giggles. So very olde England, doncha know?

Fran is one of highlight of the production. From the second she appears on stage roaring laughter will be heard. Her performance in the show is comic brilliance.

Oh, Keen, I really need to work on making sure my sarcasm comes through more clearly in my posts. I think the cast here is PERFECT. Mazzie and GUNN? Hello? Get this into a studio, now!

PEACE.

I think the age point is a very valid one, particularly for Arthur. Burton was 35 when he did it, which was perfect. Still young enough to carry off the boyish charm in the first scenes, but old enough to have the gravitas for the end.

Casting such an old Arthur (Byrne is almost 60) gives the impression that Guenevere is dumping grandpa for a hot young stud. (This ain't The Baker's Wife.) But if all three in the romantic triangle are about the same age, and all attractive, things become much more interesting.

Arthur does get cast as over 50 most of the time, it seems. In all three Broadway revivals this was the case and on the recent tour, Michael York was over 60 when he played Arthur.

Just sayin'. :)

Brian Stokes Mitchell would be fascinating in the role of King Arthur!

I'm really looking forward to Marin Mazzie's Queen Quenivere and the hottie Nathan Gunn as Sir Lancelot!!

DayDreamer:

I just found out that it was only broadcasting on KCTS-HD here in Seattle a couple of days ago with no broadcast on regular KCTS (who do I have to write to at KCTS about this!!!).

But a stroke of luck as my sister recently bought a DVD/VCR combo recorder that has a digital tuner, so it picks up all those free HD channels!

I'm pretty sure that someone you know must have Comcast digital that they can record for you.

I listened to it last night, up to "If Ever I Could Leave You." I really enjoyed it, though I've never been crazy about the show itself.

Gabriel Byrne doesn't really have to sing, he is playing the Richard Burton role.

When I saw the original production, Richard Burton sang!

With all the wondering about whether or not Gabriel Byrne can sing, I don't think King Arthur is a singing role. Richard Burton certainly didn't sing it. Neither did Richard Harris, really. Both of them were in the Rex Harrison school of speak singing. So unless he's totally tone deaf, I'm sure we'll see more of the same. Unless he really CAN sing it.

I don't remember Morgan le Fay in any other production. Is this added?

I was commenting based on the fact that I saw the show last night and the verdict is that he cannot and really does not sing. :)

Anyone who says Burton didn't sing isn't listening to the cast recording very carefully.

"In all three Broadway revivals this was the case and on the recent tour, Michael York was over 60 when he played Arthur."

And he was HORRID.

This isn't airing where I am until Sunday. Woe.

She was in the original production I saw, and figured fairly prominently with Mordred.

Richard Burton not only sang it, but did it wonderfully. His "How to Handle a Woman" is breathtaking in its simplicity.

I am also tired of Arthur being played by "Grandpa". He should be the same age as Guinivere.

I know! It seems so obvious, I don't know why no one involved in an actual production seems to get it!

well... production photos are up... how did I know they were going to go the goth drag queen route with Mordred?

Fran looks fierce though!

Those pictures left me rather underwhelmed... hopefully that won't be the sentiment after we all see it this evening...
