I was actually really sexually confused about the show. I think that is one of its biggest flaws. It felt like there was a remnants of some kind of love story but now it's gone. I don’t really know. My friend told me there isn’t homosexuality in the books... but I read that is subtle.. he isn't the brightest crayon so I can see him missing it. Anyways I wanted someone to be in love gay or not. I would have liked more about a loved one not being able to crossover or whatever. I haven't read the books, but i'm sure it's all in there.
I didnt even buy the love between the mother and son. It's a tough show.. Lestat is so self-involved as a character, i never for once thought he cared about anyone but himself. It was very hard to believe he felt sorry for his "victims." He did create the world he lives in. It's kind of maddening when you think about how difficult this show is to make into a musical. It's really tough stuff, for a reader, an audience anyone. Not everything can work unless they force it into some kind of bway formula.

In the source novels, the vampires are basically bisexual and really sexually charged.
But that kiss between Armanda and Lestat and the song Embrace It were both quite homosexual.
As was Lestat's relationship with Nicolas.

They're no bisexual - they're not sexual beings at all.
They cannnot have sex - whatever is in between their legs doesn't work - they are attracted to youth and beauty - there's nothing sexual about it, although the attraction of good looking vampires to another good looking vampire is sexy to us, the viewers, but as far as the vampires are concerned - they don't want sex. They can't have sex. They are obsessed with beauty and youth - it's gender blind.
The sexuality of the characters as portrayed in this musical is the least of the show's problems.

wow munk, sexuality and sex are not the same thing. vampires are indeed sexual beings, and very bi, but no whats between their legs doesnt work. they describe drinking blood as the most incredible sensation ever. theres a book, tale of the body theif, where he becomes human for a short time and has sex (or rather rapes) a girl and discusses how unsatisfying it is in comparison.
and to whoever asked- theres really only one instance in the books that I can think of where a loved one doesnt want to become a vampire, but then Lestat turns them anyway. Id agree with him being selfish but he is by and large the novels' most complex character so it isnt fair to sum him up in one word either.

All I know is they are sexualized as gay/sort of bi on stage, and the only love that is allowed is between a mother and son. And, the only accepted end state for this gay/vampire is solitary celibacy. Sounds to me like a commercial for Exodus international.
It isn't a big leap to apply a little queer theory and come up with one of the most homophobic musicals I've EVER seen.

omg, touch! yer so, well, touchy. elton john is a gay, dude. rob roth, gay. to even infer that these two luminaries of the glbt community (to say nothing of their meteoric status in the theatre community) could conceive of something that could in anyway slight the glbt community or be perceived as remotely homophobic is laughable. i mean, to even think that they'd be so unaware as to allow such sentiments to dominate their piece like that is just...well, it stretches credulity. stretches, i say!

Posted: 4/23/06 at 7:26pmok, see I havent seen the show, but in the books, lestat feels a strong connection to his mother and they have a power struggle on how to spend their "lives" once theyve turned vampire. theres also this thing about vampires being able to read each others thoughts & such, EXCEPT for those vampires whom you have personally turned which complicates matters. presumably a vampire turns someone into a vampire because they love them but by personally doing the deed they become mostly incompatible.
