A mixed-negative review from Bloomberg, it doesn't seem very detailed to me?? 2.5 stars.

I never doubted Norbert would get glowing reviews, he is often the best thing in many a production. Looks like this will be one of them.
As far as awards go, let's see what the rest of the field looks like b4 w start "giving" things to people.

For castlestreet & Kad:
The only musical to open after Next to Normal was 9 to 5. There were also several play revivals - 4 of which (Joe Turner's Come and Gone, Mary Stuart, The Norman Conquests and Waiting for Godot) got very good reviews including a few all-out raves.
So unless you think 9 to 5 was unfairly panned, castlestreet, you probably want to find a better example.

Posted: 4/10/11 at 11:09pmI think it's silly to assume that critics have some sort of musical Highlander philosophy of "There can only be one!" or a quota of how many positives/raves they give. It often ends up being there is only one truly lauded new musical simply because... there's often only one new musical worth lauding. Sometimes, such as last season, there isn't even that.

Aww sad to see so many mixed/negative reviews on the show!
Do you think Aaron Tveit will still get a nomination with these reviews? They critics seem to "like" him but not "LOVE" him. Norbert on the other hand will most definitely get a nomination I think.
As for Best Musical...any chances still?

I would be surprised if Tveit weren't nominated still, but there are a lot of worthy leading male performances this season. Unless he has a great following in the community, any reason to throw him over for someone who would have otherwise gone unacknowledged might be taken advantage of.
Tveit is young and I'm sure will have a nomination over the course of his career.
As for Best Musical, eh, I'm sure it'll still be nominated, unless the committee is particularly daring (which they rarely are) and wants to nominate Scottsboro Boys or something.

Wow, I asked about Butz before I read Brantley and than he answered me.
I think Butz has to be in leading and is now a contender. Remember Tviet did not get a nod for NORMAL so the comitee has a history of ignoring him (ok. only one show) This could mean a Rannels/Gad/Butz/Sheldon/Radcliffe race.
And I base this on an overall of reviews not just Brantley.

Posted: 4/10/11 at 11:37pmOkay, let's put this to bed; Aaron will be nominated. Critic reviews don't equate Tony nominations, and Aaron was fantastic in the show. I'm still hoping for a win, but if Norbert gets put in the Leading category he'll win.

Actually, this can't be "put to bed" until after the nominations have been come out. A lot of people thought a nomination for Tveit in Next to Normal were a sure thing- and that was a much safer bet than this.
I think a nomination for him is LIKELY but not 100% dead certain at all.

Posted: 4/10/11 at 11:49pmI'm thinking the producers might be wise to push Norbert into featured. He'd be almost assured of a win there. (I said before I found Wopat deserving of a win there as well, but these reviews really didn't highlight him very much at all. Very unfortunate.)

A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.

It's tough when you have a character that really rides the line. Butz (and, for that matter, Sheldon) COULD be considered leads, but if there is the presence of another, bigger lead in the show, they usually are shoved aside. Like what happened with Broderick in The Producers and Chenoweth in Wicked. Yes, they are as much a lead as their costar, but are overshadowed, and aren't considered weighty enough to win in the lead category often times.
I really think it'd be a huge shame if Tveit was ignored this year. That'd be two egregious snubs in a matter of a few years, in my opinion.

Posted: 4/11/11 at 3:35amNot surprised at all by these reviews. I loved Butz. I thought Tveit sang the score beautifully and looked great but had no depth of character. I was bored during the first act completely. 2nd was better but not great still.

Posted: 4/11/11 at 5:05amNot really surprised by the reviews, I think most of us knew it was coming, but personally I really loved the show and it was one of the better musicals I've seen in a long time. I have a horrid feeling this will become a Tonys also ran now, a respectable amount of nominations but wins look elusive outside of Norbet. I'm of the opinion they should keep Norbet featured and Aaron (who I loved) as lead though. I just hope they get out there with some publicity to keep bums on seats now, it would be a shame to see this just die out.

The producers would be wise to campaign Butz for Featured Actor, where he would almost be assured a win. I think they would be able to make a case for it- he has two numbers in the first act, but his presence trails off significantly in the second act, where he gets the one duet with Wopat's character and then the duet with Tveit that serves as the finale.
Between his glowing reviews and celebrity status, I think Daniel Radcliffe has become more and more of a front runner for Lead Actor. At this point, I don't see anyone being able to capsize him. I have a feeling it's going to shake up like this:

Thank you Adam...I don't know if tears are necessarily but definitely an eye roll. Grey was way too cutesy, way too Mr. Cellophane.
Back on topic, my daughter really wants to see "Catch Me." With reviews like this, I don't think we have to worry about not finding discount tickets.
