Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 9/22/24
 Sep 24 2024, 01:50:56 PM

Yikes. Yikes. And more yikes. Summer's over and the fall slump is here. Those numbers for Back to the Future and Water for Elephants are rough and can't be sustainable at all. & Juliet also hitting a rough spot.

Thrilled for Oh, Mary and Outsiders however.

THE NOTEBOOK to Close on Broadway on December 15, 2024
 Aug 30 2024, 10:32:08 AM

Yes, it's an odd choice for a closing date considering everything everyone's already mentioned, but I'm always glad when productions get a longer advanced closing date. I'm sure it's easier for the cast, crew and creatives to stomach being told they have 3 months left rather than 3 weeks. Gives them time and breathing room to deal with the new reality, then plan, accommodate, and hopefully find new work before the final performance.

Suffs can and I believe will be able to make it to January.  A friend suggested to me the other day how beautiful it could be (hopefully if Harris wins in November) if they close on Sunday January 19, the day before inauguration.

It's only a matter of time for The Notebook.  And the odds of a January closing for Back to the Future continue to rise.

I know Oh, Mary has already extended into November, but I'd say the chances are high they extend into 2025. Maybe even easily recoup before then? What are the chances of them making it an open run?

I do wonder if we will see Back to the Future post a closing notice sometime after Labor Day. I thought the summer would be a juggernaut for them. But the demand isn't as strong as it had been and I'm sure the producers see the real money being made on tour, its continued success in London, and future international productions. Could they announce a January closing, getting a holiday season boost, opening up the Winter Garden for the Spring?

Hot damn, those Wiz numbers are impressive. Still very surprised they didn't try to cram in just a few more weeks but hey, go out with a bang.

I anticipate a Notebook closing announcement any day now. Could they be trying to get through Broadway week and close up on September 15?

I guess Water for Elephants and Suffs are making a run for it. Hard to say for how much longer though. I think Su

Will we ever see Avenue Q again?
 Aug 14 2024, 04:10:29 PM

Some shows are 100% worth revisiting years and decades after they premiere.  Some shows are products of their time -- cast albums and regional productions serving as lovely little time capsules -- and should be left in their respective times.

I love Avenue Q but the show falls into the latter category and nothing you spout will make your fantasies come true, Flash.

There are many shows I adore and have fond memories of, but are merely for the time period in which they are c

I'm curious about their scheduling. Starting in September, they eliminate the Wednesday evening show in favor of a second weekday matinee. This is most absolutely due to high demand they're probably receiving from school groups but curious if they'll continue with this schedule in the post-holiday winter months and into the Spring.

Either way, I'm over the moon this show is proving so popular.

Welch’s GATSBY to premiere in 2024 ART

Really curious about the score and excited about this production. I don't know what their future plans are, but do we think there's a chance of a premiere cast recording as a sort of placeholder to capture the show in its current form with this cast? With the current Gatsby on Broadway, I'm sure they're exploring all other options and markets to take this show considering the strong reception it's been receiving.

I know there were discussions earl

Perhaps. But in this past season that gave us one surprise after another, I wouldn't rush to predict.

I, for one, was certain that despite my enjoyment of it, Gatsby would crash and burn in spectacular fashion in the way Lempicka did; and despite my neutral stance on it, I thought Notebook would become the sleeper hit.

Either I'm just not very good at this, or mainstream audiences are viewing Broadway in

My bet is the Barrymore in the Spring. Unless they have a currently occupied house and awaiting the producers to post a closing notice.

I am thrilled that Gatsby is doing so well.  I know how the response has been but I really enjoyed it and hope it sticks around for a good while.  I think the producers have actually been very clever in their strategy.  Monday night and Thursday matinee performances seem to help drive its ticket sales on top of its incredible marketing and media presence.  While it remains to be seen how well it does in the long run, I applaud the production for defying

I can't speculate on what's coming in, where, and when. But I have an inkling about what's going and when. And I have been wrong many times but based on trends, history, and box office grosses my thoughts are:

The Notebook is making a go of it but I don't see them going into the fall. The business just isn't there.  Gone by Labor Day is my guess.

Water for Elephants could be right behind but with Grant Gustin leaving September
