I've recently seen Wicked and really enjoyed it. However I wonder what trick Elphaba uses to survive the "melting"? I didn't know anything about this show before, I guess there are some people here who know it quite well, so I hope you can give me a clue.
ummm.....trapdoor. Also, I was under the impression that the whole water-thing isn't so much of a threat in the musical version, as she gets rained on right before I'm Not That Girl and doesn't melt. Also:
FIYERO (spoken) Do you hear that - water will melt her?! People are so empty-headed, they'll believe anything!
I THINK she uses the whole melting thing as a ploy to seceretly get to Fyearo's castle.
"If you try to shag my husband while I am still alive, I will shove the art of motorcycle maintenance up your rancid little Cu**. That's a good dear"
Tom Stoppard's Rock N Roll

It is a ploy she uses to escape so she can get to Fiyero and they can be together at his castle...
Technically it's a trapdoor that is used. Remember poor Idina in her last performance(s)
They merely thought that and it was rumor because they hated her and beleived her "soul is so unclean, pure water can melt her!" *Pshaw* Water can not melt a human. She is a human woman And not WICKED at all
I am very glad you enjoyed it

folkyboy- Gotta love Glinda It sure fits this discussion

I was under the impression that the witch melting takes place AT Fiyero's castle. He says the castle has plenty of tunnels and trapdoors, which to me means "hey, we will use those in our plan."
I know that in the musical she is not allergic to water and it was all a ploy, but I just wanted to state about the book for some reason. **shrugs shoulders**
"They're eating her and then they're going to eat me. OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!" -Troll 2
*slight SPOILERS about the book in my post, just to let anyone who may not want to read them know*
yeah, in the novel she really IS very allergic to water. It doesn't mealt her, but it does burn her to death in the end (which is one thing I like better about the show... call me a sucker for happy endings, but I much prefer the nice fairy tale ending that at least makes the story end up SOMEWHAT happy. The book is just really, REALLY depressing in the end)
but i've always kind of assumed that in the show she just isn't.. I'm pretty sure that in the show it doesnt affect her it all. She's just heard that that's a rumor going around about her, so she uses it as a ploy to make everyone think she died. I could be wrong.. but I've always just thought that :) so the whole thing is just a fake, but she knows they'll all believe it
I don't need a life that's normal. That's way too far away. But something next to normal would be okay. Something next to normal is what I'd like to try. Close enough to normal to get by.
actually, I think thats not a special effect or anything :) Because they really do use a trap door which elphie goes down in (a la the incredibly sucky idina incedent), so I think that's really her shadow just going down into the trap door behind the skrim

As far as I know, it's just her shadow going down the trapdoor behind the scrim.

I chose, and my world was shaken- So what? The choice may have been mistaken,
The choosing was not...
"Every day has the potential to be the greatest day of your life." - Lin-Manuel Miranda
"And when Idina Menzel is singing, I'm always slightly worried that her teeth are going to jump out of her mouth and chase me." - Schmerg_the_Impaler
I much prefer the book ending, but the ending of the musical makes sense with the ending of the Wizard of Oz movie where she's being totall over-the-top in her melting with the "what a world! What a world!"
"I've got to get me out of here
This place is full of dirty old men
And the navigators and their mappy maps
And moldy heads and pissing on sugar cubes
While you stare at your books."
If you watch the movie, at the start of the melting scene, wind starts blowing up her dress, creating a bubble. When she is finished melting, the wind stops blowing. The split second after the wind machine stops, you can see the remains of her dress hang down through a circular hole in the floor (the trap door). It's actually quite interesting if you watch very closely.
does anyone know if the scream they do every night is a sound effect for the melting scene., or actally them..... and does anybody know if the meltingis a special effect because i know elphaba is lowered through a trapdoor but it looks like a projection
