I know it literally means that they think the show has too much money, too big of sets and too stulistic costumes, or too much special effects. Someone said in one of the other threads that they though the CHARLIE BROWN revival was overdon and I can't find anything overdone in it. Someone else said from seeing the phantom trailer that it looked overdone and it seems like such a lame reason for not liking it. What does htis mean really?

Posted: 12/2/04 at 7:12pmI really dissagree that Charlie Brown was overdone. The sets were minimal and looked like the original comic illustrations. How could it be overdone? Its based on drawings. There were no flashing lights, or smoke--I think the comic was truly brought to life. Just my opinion though.

Posted: 12/2/04 at 7:13pmSometimes certain production aspects are just unneeded and distract from the most essential parts of the show, which are the story, characters, and sometimes the music. Production design should enhance these essential parts and work with them, not overwhelm them. When it does overwhelm them, it's overdone.

Posted: 12/2/04 at 7:23pmIt also mean that you always see it around, like "guys and dolls" or "bye bye birdie" or "hello dolly". Mostly shows you did in high school.

Posted: 12/2/04 at 7:28pmmy definition of a show being overdone is when it's constantly revived ad-nauseum: case in point: "Gypsy". go do some research and see how often this one turns up. and don't get me wrong, it's a great musical but producers should really start revisiting some other shows that deserve a second look.

Posted: 12/2/04 at 7:34pmI'm not sure. The first trailer, especially, was way over-edited, and the design work does look extremely lavish, but we have yet to see if that detailed lavishness overwhelms the story. So I'll withold judgement.

Posted: 12/2/04 at 7:35pmno. not at all. POTO has to be lavish spectacle. it takes place in Paris, and Opera House, it has a gothic/horror theme. all these elements call for an almost-epic approach. from what i've seen they've done a great job. i see Oscars on the horizon for that film.

I've always used overdone when a show is tacky and obviously is supposed to impress me when it underwhelms me

I don't think the movie of POTO is overdone. As Marquise said, it has to be a big spectacle. The Victorian era wasn't called The Gilded Age for nothing.
As for my opinion on overdone, my take on it is shows, songs and monologues that everyone and their moms have done. Have you ever been to a Thespian convention? You'll see every example of "overdone" at those. A girl can only sit through endless renditions of "On My Own" so many times...

I didn't say that (that was me who posted it), that the was general consensus of those I talked to that saw it and didn't like it.
