Why not? If you are not familiar with people in the theatre saying dumb things you haven't been paying attention. It seems clear to me that what they had in their head at an early developmental stage bled into what they said publicly. That was dumb, but what do you gain by obsessing over it? I say let's move on. If they come up with something brilliant to present, we can talk about it when we see it, and guess what no one will remember this faux pas.

ETA: There's no such thing as bad publicity and this is by far the most publicity they've ever received.

I agree…this whole thing is being blown up by the writers (to their detriment)… not sure if it’s stupidity or a clever plan to get more attention

Can’t ignore the evidence…

I feel like they’re gaslighting everyone

That's the first time I have ever seen you say something negative about your best friend who posts at  Forbes (or is that just your alter ego? you've never fessed up lol).

See, your clueless buddy didn't do his homework so he ended up with egg on his face.

The writers of Maria seem like clueless twits of the lowest order.  I’m sure what they come up with will be entirely authentic—and yet not possessing 1/1000th the artistry of West Side Story.

On what basis do you make either assertion? Kindly outline the intellectually defensible, evidence-based explanation for the first assertion. Then, please try to convince us that the second assertion is not irrelevant.

I have already said I thought their public statements were dumb, but I could write a book on the litany of dumb things Arthur Laurents said during in his life. Was he a clueless twit of the lowest order too?
