Yessir...Depp and Tim Burton are indeed confirmed as is the beginning date of principal photography at Pinewood Studios in London (February 5th, 2007). No one else in the film's cast has been confirmed nor mentioned.

Depp has officially been confirmed. Supposedly, his partner Vanessa was given permission by the producers to help in his vocal training.

I don't think Streep is miscast. Mrs. Lovett works as an older woman obsessed with a handsome younger married man. At least we know she has the skill for accents, great acting, and the capability to sing.

If this is true, then Meryl Streep is bucking the trend of actresses not getting juicy roles after age 50.

She's having quite the run for such a "mature" actress.

Interesting. My bad. *goes to mercilessly flog sources*

Still...Meryl. Inneresting casting choice. I'm also not really sure how I feel about Depp in the movie...he's definitely creepy, but not SCARY creepy.

And is it just me, or does he seem like he would be a twittering tenor and not NEARLY manly-sounding enough?

Exactly, JailyardGuy. (Thanks for saving me the trouble of writing out my "why this idea stinks" rant for the nth time.)

JG - that's an old article from before it was conifrmed. There were a lot of threads on it...and Sondheim wanting a vocal test. Apparently, I guess, he passed.

I know it's a month old, but it just illustrates that SS wasn't exactly fudging his frillies over the idea of casting Our Fair Freakboy...but if he passed the vocal test, then kudos, and I look forward to his, erm, interpretation of the score.

I'm waiting for the confirmation...

(not very well, I might add...)

...but I couldn't be more thrilled. She has been my #1 choice from the beginning!

I love how people haunt message boards hoping for inside news and than snip back with "Source?" "Link?"

If there were a published source or link, why would we need to post the news early, and why would you be on this board to begin with?

Garland Girrl is a respected poster on this board: she didn't post the news simply because she forgot to have her green tea this morning and she's feeling fiesty.

I believe her and expect the news will go public in the next few days.

Why do we post rumors as fact in caps and get everyone's hopes up?

I just don't like getting my hopes up. Rumors rarely pan out with movies. Then again, the whole Depp/Burton thing turned out to be (shockingly, IMO) true. It seemed too good to me.

Like I said, if you can't handle the rumour mill, than you need to stick to the headlines on Broadway.com and not this message board.

The trick here is to see who starts the rumour. That usually indicates whether there is any truth to it or not.

Hey, it might be true... and then STILL fall apart. Then again, it might be prematurely "perceived."

This is Hollywood we're talking about.

(okay, larger circle...)

This is SHOW BIZ we're talking about.

Take everything you hear about anything with a big grain of salt.

That's the Golden Rule.

I love the idea of Streep, and always have. And if it's moving forward with her as Lovett, they're probably deep in contract negotiations right now... which could also fall apart...

I don't get my hopes up about casting until I go to the cineplex and see with my own eyes that they actually have the part.

So, smile, nod, be happy, hope for the best... and swallow that salt!

EDIT: That last part sounds dirty. I think I'll let it.

Though I was crossing my fingers for Toni Collette, I admit it doesn't get better than Streep. If someone can match (or at least come close to) Angela Lansbury's Lovett, it is Ms.Streep. Great news, hopefully the rest of the cast will be as perfect. (i.e. Donna Murphy as The Beggar Woman)

Toni would be great, but it comes down to box office.

As soon as Toni "carries" a big hit film on her shoulders (as a leading lady), then she will be considered bankable.

...And I wish that would happen to her very soon. She's certainly talented enough... now she just needs to get "popular."

Meryl has the ability to take a so-so film and turn it into box office gold, because she has a built-in film audience who will buy tickets specifically to see her "do her thing"... and she also happens to be damn good! Always a winning combination.

It's about time Ms. Streep win another Oscar!

Oh lord, that we should suffer this woman's mannerisms and tics that pass themselves off as acting. I can't think of anything worse than Streep in this part.

In case anyone's interested...

I know someone involved in casting the film and they tell me Bernadette Peters was brought in to read/sing for the role a week or two ago...I sh*t you not.
