How are they planning to have time for all of these performances? All of the nominated musicals, 3 nominated plays, 2 not nominated musicals and now Turnblads on a boat.
"These rabid fans...possess the acting talent to portray the hooker...Linda Eder..." -The New York Times
Actually this is HORRIBLE!!! RCCL has no PLACE ON THE TONY AWARDS...The things we are doing for money. There are so many touring productions, and currently running shows on BROADWAY RIGHT NOW that could use the exposure/press. Why not use one of them if there is "extra time" in the telecast. To go to a cruise ship where and pick shows that are not even EAE....Just wrong....and no one in the theatre community respects a crusie ship..... Even worse is the slap in the face to all of the shows running now on Broadway. Honor broadway....not "live theatre on the ship"...Honor a little kid in some small town singing their heart out, or the shows that are previous winners, or Phantom coming up on 25 years, recreate a previous Tony Winning Performance....Yo don't go and get a cruise ship..//THAT IS WRONG ON SO MANY LEVELS
PS: I would rather see you create a new category and really let our thetare history soar...not dwindle or be reduced to a cruise ship
"Oh, honey... watching the Tonys gave me a great idea. Instead of paying to see all these Broadway shows, let's just go on a cruise and see a bastardized version of Hairspray instead!!!"
Seriously. Why not let something else on Broadway perform, or even another touring cast? A cruise ship performance of Hairspray?? So many things wrong with this.
Now, I'd like to say, that I know many Broadway performers who have performed, and still perform on cruise ships. I'm not looking down at the performers or what they do at all... Hell, I'd love to perform on a cruise... or even go on one! But when it's the TONY AWARDS and they recognize a cruise ship show, over a Broadway, touring or EVEN a widely renown regional theatre... it's not about theatre. It's supposed to be about honoring theatre... not promoting a ****ty cruise line... Not to mention the fact that of all SHOWS... Hairspray... It's won Best Musical, played Broadway and toured for YEARS, has 2 movies, and every community theatre in the world is doing it right now... Hairspray... Why not bring Memphis back in, while we're at it.
I agree with you. And its not as if our union AEA has any rights to the work on a ***king cruise ship. If those people were on AEA contracts I would feel differently but they are not. Its a reduced version of the show.
Want a Hairspray number then call Marrisa and Harvey,Kerry Butler, Corey Reyonlds, Laura Bell, and The original Dynamites and mount it...not a cruise ship.....PEOPLE SHOULD PROTEST THIS!!!!
