But if I see a poster of Adam on someone's wall and they've never heard of Cabaret...or Aida...or Chess...(i.e. no context for this guy they luuv) this is where I will have issues.

But why? Sorry to keep harping on this, but I just don't get it. Why are you going to have issues? Why can't someone go see it and enjoy it without having to commit themselves to the entire Pascal (or Rapp or Diggs or Menzel) oeuvre?

Ok, I have skimmed through most of the replies here, and I'm not sure but am I the only one who doesnt care how the "new" fans come around? Rent has a wonderful message to spread and if the big screen is a way to get that message out to people who wouldnt or couldnt see it on stage then so be it! And if they only like it because Adam is hot and dont even think about the message untill five years from now when they are faced with diversity then so be that to, atleast they will be exposed to the message!

Why would anyone give a second thought about who likes the same movie (or musical, or ANYTHING) as them? I'm not seeing the big deal.

Let's just relax and wait anxiously until the movie comes out.

I kind of agree.

But at the same time, I'm glad the film will reboost ticket sales at the theater.

RENT is a great show. I hope the movie does it justice! So what if a bunch of "new rentheads" evolve. This movie is going to expose so many people to a show that we already know is something meaningful as well as to Broadway in general. Maybe these new rentheads will go to NY to see the show and maybe they will see other shows too. Why do so many people on this board want to keep this show (and others) to themselves? I hope everyone understands it, falls in love with it, and finds a love of Broadway because of it!

Argh, I'm sorry to whom ever this offends, but i hate the idea of fake RENTHEADS. I complain about this all the time to my friends and they probably want to kill me but to know that their will be people out there who only like RENT because of the catchy 'La Vie Boheme' tune is going to kill me. RENT isn't only about the music, its about friendship and love and i'm worried that teenagers are not going to pick up on that. I just really hope the message gets out, and hopefully it brings more people to the broadway stage and RENT will last longer then we expected.

And, wooh, talk about starting a fashion fad. What is with these young girls heading to some fancing store and buying 'bohemian' wear? It's probably not because of the RENT movie, yet. Wow, off topic...just something i've noticed, not that i don't like this style or anything...

Anyways, love RENT for the message not only the music.

...i know this topic is going to bug me till the day i die.

hey as long as the message of Rent gets to these new found Rent lovers i'm fine with it. More people need to be exposed to the arts and if this is what it takes so be it

I think most current Rentheads are just having problems with the fact that their uniqueness is being destroyed--me included. It almost seems like we want others to know that WE LOVED IT BEFORE IT BECAME A MOVIE. It's like when a band becomes big and people start proclaiming that they knew them BEFORE they were big and they helped them get to where they are now, etc. But I think Larson would have liked his message to be spread to others...and it will boost ticket sales.

i think the defining moment will be if a splash of Rent is in a cheerleading competition. I was watching my cousins tape from nationals? in Florida and there in a routine was TTB, i saw it once on limewire, but don't have the copy. i'll look for it some more.

I think everyone is taking this to be more then it is.

So say people who see Rent for the first time dig that catchy "La Vie Boheme" tune and get swept up in the music. It's bound to happen and I venture to guess that is how many of the RENTheads on the boards right now got into the musical. You first listen and enjoy the music then go back and understand the message. That's the way it usually is. And it's just as childish to make the argument that you loved it first. So what? There were 1000 people before you that liked it before you. Would you rather not a movie be made so you can keep the love to yourself? Sounds stupid to me.

Also I don't mean to sound bitchy, just my thoughts on the matter.

you're totally right and like I said before, if the message and spirit of rent is spread around the US then it can only do good works

Rent has ALWAYS had annoying fans, trust me. Since the very beginning and ever since, there have been immature, annoying fangirls (and occasionally boys re: New Rentheads) who have inhabited the Rent forums, message boards, and online communities, not to mention the rush seats. If any of you have been around for a while, this should be no big surprise. I mean, seriously, if you've only read these forums at BWW, you know that.

While it's true that in the past six months, there's been an influx of increasingly annoying, fans, many of whom are very young, this really is nothing new. It's bound to get 'worse' before it gets better, so no point in stressing about it. Rent is a show. It's not owned by a particular set of fans, to the exclusion of others. And if you're going to have 'issues' with new fans' love of castmembers, then it's time you took a good hard look at your obsession with the show. :)
