He didn't "rip" AF, he made a joke.
It was a cute interview... as always... especially when he's on THE VIEW.
I love how Barbara Walters tied in THE ICEMAN COMETH with his line in THE PRODUCERS.

Surprising...I found his accent strange, unnecessary and think he changed dialects several times during the course of the show. If anything I thought he was a weak link. How many more shows can he play the same whining part? This is not to say I don't like Nathan Lane. I enjoy him and his performance - just don't think he is breaking any new ground.

Actually, no he didn't. With all of the bad notices the show received, Nathan himself got mostly nothing but praise for making the whole thing somewhat watchable. He's a really gifted actor, but he's also smart enough to know when to play Nathan Lane and when to break that ground. When he attempts to break new ground, he's not really noticed for it, because more often than not, people are paying to see Nathan play Nathan. Did you see Butley? Neither did anyone else... So overlooked.
I hope The Iceman Cometh goes well in Chicago, I'm definitely excited about his portrayal! Just maybe, it could get a transfer? Although, his tv series just filmed it's pilot in Atlanta, GA. So, if that picks up, I guess he'll be a bit busy for a Broadway run...

He was very good in it, really got into the character. As he did in Dedication or The Stuff of Dreams.

I would have gladly watched Nathan Lane playing Nathan Lane in the role if it would have added some humor to the show. Apparently it did.

Posted: 3/8/12 at 3:34pmOverall I really had nothing but praise for the cast, but the material was terrible: La Cage Aux Addams, but Charles Addams' pitch-black wit was replaced with puns and gags not even fit for an Elvira: Mistress of the Dark direct-to-video sequel. Haven't seen the revised version, which I hear is a tremendous improvement. Still, glad to hear Mr. Lane has a sense of humor about it, as he seems to do about most things.

I think Nathan Lane really liked Adam's Family but was certainly aware of the critical drubbing. He certainly was aware of not being nominated for a Tony for it.
Nathan Lane is a comic. He will make a joke about anything if it gets a laugh. That's what comics do. His poking fun at the critical drubbing at Adam's Family at his expense is part of his charming but self deprecating humor and why we love him.
Nathan Lane is nobody's fool.
In my opinion, Adam's Family has a nice score, a gorgeous set and some nice staging The problem was that sophmoric book which was downright embarrassing
which nearly sunk the entire enterprise.
Although it was flawed and sophmoric, many people were entertained.

He discusses the NY revival of Butley, something he long wanted Lane to do, and even compares the differences between Lane's and Alan Bates' performances. He felt Lane's accent was excellent, and loved him in the role.
