Not that I've even seen the movie yet, but I can't see taking Rent as it is on stage, barely altering it, and putting it into film form. That would be BAD.
If people love the show as it is, okay. But you do have to change it for a different medium, and if there are holes in the stage show, why not make up for some of it in putting it on film?
It might seem like an entirely ridiculous idea because there has never been a film that did that before. But I can't help but wonder how a sung-through film might've come out...
Well, you're already asking -- in the average musical -- for the audience to suspend the thought that it's weird for people to be singing. I think having it completely sung through would not only be far too stage-y, but that it would turn people off, and possibly confuse them.
Amazing review babe. Wish I hadn't read it though. I've never made it a secret that I never really enjoyed RENT, enjoyed it for what it was and could see how people love it, but was never really a fan (I'm more of a HAIR guy). Now I'm even more skeptical about the movie. I'll give it a chance though as I am already being looked at as the "theatre guy who will come with us to see RENT" by my married friends. All in all I really hope this doesn't kill the positive buzz around The Producers if it fails. Lets look at it this way, if RENT fails then 2 of the last 2 movie musicals, Phantom being the other, will have bombed. If this is the case I think we can all kiss movie musicals good-bye. I propose that if we want movie versions to continue we need to support this and Producers regardless. Cause there is no doubt in my mind that if RENT bombs Dreamgirls may very well get the axe before frame one is filmed.

Dreamgirls is probably going to have star-power, making it a different animal right from the start. If The Producers is recieved at all the way Chicago was, it could cancel out negative impacts Rent might have on the whole idea, I think. Then again, I've always assumed The Producers would be something people like more than Rent, on screen.
Munk, I don't even know what to say, did we see the same movie? I 100% completely and respectfully dissagree. This film HAS to get a Best Picture nod, it deserves it. I'm baffled by these negative reviews ::shrug::
EverythingIsRENT...aren't you a little biased? LOL
I mean if a WICKED movie came out, I'd be raving about it even if it was a critical flop and you seem like you are a giant RENT fan (probably of the show before the movie).
I agree Emcee. If the Producers is even remotely successful it will keep the genre alive and erase the memory of RENT, if it bombs(which I hope it won't). Producers may very well sell on the name power alone and non theatre people wanting to see Ferris Beuller, The Bride and Ron Burgandy sing. The star power alone could however keep Dreamgirls alive and by casting the names they have, they already have a built in audience above and beyond the theatre community. BTW not to thread jack but am I the ONLY one who has no problem with Beyonce being in this movie?

Thank you Bwaygirl! I thought I was alone. My best friend is convinced that it's going to be this century's version of The Wiz. Wickedrocks I'm in the same boat with you, as far as Producers go. I doubt I will be able to walk out of that movie and hate it. They'd have to severly butcher it for me to even pretend that I hate it.

I think what this all boils down to is the distinction between making a GOOD movie (of which I'm certainly not a good judge) and if they've done well by Rent. In that sense, sure there are Rentheads who are going to go "GIVE IT OSCARS!!!" but I have a feeling that at least in terms of something as huge as saying "it HAS to get best picture. It just HAS to!" they're being blinded by their love of it. It "deserves it" because it's Rent. Which won't be the case with the academy; it has to deserve it because it's well-made by THEIR standards, not yours. It's not that likely simply by virtue of the fact that it has a lot more competition as a movie than it did for Tonys as a show.
