I love shows like this, Wedding Singer, All Shook Up, Hairspray- just feel good, fun shows. People have different opinions on what they like, it's good there is so much diversity on Broadway!
I feel this show is Heads and Shoulders above THE WEDDING SINGER. I couldn't wait for that to be over and LEGALLY BLONDE I can't wait to see again. And I usually like more serious stuff.
first thing i want to say is that I AM ***TOTALLY IN LOVE*** WITH Hilarious LESLIE KRITZER & Gorgeous MATTHEW RISCH!!!
this is such a fun show, & so good hearted. you all know me, & know that i like my humor dark...more of a bruised purple than a bright pink...so i didnt think i was gonna care for LEGALLY BLONDE. i just wanted to go & support Leslie.
BUT MY GOSH, i had a great time!!!
Laura Bell Bundy is very funny & very loveable. She's powerful, she can do the comedy as well as the athletic dancing, stay in key & look lovely all at the same time.
Now i understand why people make such a deal about Orfeh; she's hilarious & she's got soul.
Christian Borle has such good karma, you can see the kindness & light emanating from him.
Each of the ensemble gets a chance to shine with a laugh line or crazy gymnastic dance move, but when i saw Matthew Risch, little pink valentines went fluttering around my head! of course, i googled him as soon as i got home & saw that he likes Amy Sedaris, so now i'm officially in love.
The dogs, Chico & Chloe, are adorable & so talented! its a testimonial to the cast that the dogs *DONT* steal the show, because they really do pull their weight as castmembers!
Set Design is clever & cartoony! Costumes are colorful & sexy!
the music is addictive..it was very hard to sit still & not dance in my seat, & i noticed everyone around me was having the same issue...finally we all gave up & just bopped along during ACT II.
i wish that i had enough blonde in my soul to say "OMIGOD YOU GUYS, I LOVED IT!!!", but i *can* honestly say that i REALLY REALLY REALLY enjoyed it!!
it aint GYPSY; it isnt even HAIRSPRAY, but it *IS* a fun, kindhearted show with the gentle message of being true to yourself, & by being true to yourself you'll find success.
I had a very fun time and it's a completely adorable show. I agree with Foster about the score. Although I'd like to add "Ireland" to the list of memorable songs. I thought it was so sweet. But, maybe that's cause I have a thing for Irish guys.
Agreed about the choreography. The jump-roping number is genious. But, that's really the extent of how good it gets. Nothing truly impressive. I think LA CAGE remains Mitchell's best work.
I, however, did love Bundy. I thought she held herself very well and really made the part her own. Didn't copy Reese at all. She plays it very vulnerable and less ditzy than Reese. But each performance has its own merits.
This was my first exposure to Orfeh. And I must say I love the woman. LOVE HER. Not a bad thing to say about her. I did see a video of "Ireland" from San Fransisco. I don't know why but I think Mitchell may have asked her to tone it down a bit, her acting I mean. I feel she was a bit more reserved and quiet with things as opposed to San Fran. But, she's just a winning presence and I'm so glad I finally got to see the woman in action.
The cast is uniformly great. Loved Andy Karl, Nikki Snelson, Natalie Joy Johnson and Leslie Kritzer. Richard Blake was, as always, in fine form.
Not a bad thing to say really.
And I agree that if it snags a Best Musical nom...it'll take it.
It has MAJOR touring potential.
And the balcony wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it'd be.

I would say it may stand a good chance at getting a nom. If it's between Hairspray and Wedding Singer and both were nominated for Best Musical and Legally Blonde is clearly better than Wedding Singer maybe tied with Hairspray then it deserves the nomination and I do agree that if it gets nominated then it has a good chance at winning..
How would you compare this show to The Wedding Singer?

I saw it on Monday and I liked Kate Wetherhead. I could hear her a lot of the time stick out vocally over the rest of the ensemble.
You are saying that as if it is a GOOD thing. It's not. When an ensemble member does not blend with the other members vocally they should be asked to back off vocally. You have solos to give you the spot light, and chorus singing should blend to sound like one voice.
I would say it may stand a good chance at getting a nom. If it's between Hairspray and Wedding Singer and both were nominated for Best Musical
Doll, WEDDING SINGER only got nominated by default. There were no other musicals left to stick in that slot.
The nominees this year could easily be GREY GARDENS, SPRING AWAKENING, CURTAINS, and LOVEMUSIK.

"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."

But we don't know anything about LoveMusik yet, it hasn't opened nor has it had any previews yet so we can't assume it will be a lock, and Curtains is not a lock yet either, if I do recall it did have some mixed reviews..As for Legally Blonde so far things seem to be turning out great for this show
I can't really compare that and LEGALLY BLONDE though. They're two seperate shows. I definitely stand by my belief that Ashford was robbed of a TONY for his choreography for WEDDING SINGER. It was far superior to PAJAMA GAME.
I would actually go far enough to say that WEDDING SINGER's choreography beats LEGALLY BLONDE's. LB is big and flashy and I guess doesn't need to rely on the choreography so much.
There's definitely some great numbers in it. But, Mitchell could have done so much more with it.

Just got home from an amazing first performance. The show is great. I couldn't believe it was as entertaining and interesting as it was. Very smart lyrics, and an INCREDIBLE performance by Laura Bell Bundy. Michael Rupert and Orfeh were both great, and Andy Karl is hilarious as the UPS guy. I think the thing that suprised me most was how much I cared about the story as it got going. A lot of that has to do with the chemistry between Christan Borle and Laura Bell, and also Orfeh. The show is a shoo-in for a LOT of Tony nominations, and this season just got a whole lot more interesting.
I think I Lovemusik gets postive reviews, it will be nominated. and Curtains will win.
If Lovemusik bombs critically, Blonde will be nominated and will win.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
