Incredibly misleading thread... They got extended for the final time until February 16th. I believe something else has the theater which is why they can't run longer. They are still bringing it to New York.
A near 9-month run for a musical is extremely good by Australian standards (especially when you consider they had a 6-month bump in prior to that as well). They extended 4 times in total. Remember this is country with a TOTAL population of 22 million (New York City alone has a population of over 8 million). And Kong had the added complication of not being able to tour Australia due to size of the production.
The theatre in which King Kong is playing (Regent Theatre) is booked by Wicked so Kong couldn't stay if they wanted to.
Don't know what's misleading about the fact that Kong finishes[closes] it's Melbourne 'extended' run on Feb.16th and then heads to the Northern Hemispheres-really quite simple.
Does anybody know the economics of shows over there? Did this KING KONG recoup even with the extensions? Was that even a possibility? Or was it never able to make money their and just being prepped for the future.
Shows in Australia even hit shows don't have long runs, Wicked did a year in Melbourne and a year in Sydney before touring to Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane then doing a stint in Singapore and Auckland. Lion King I think did two years in Sydney and a year in Melbourne but didn't tour elsewhere.
I agree that this thread title is extremely misleading. That's a fantastic run for a show in Australia, especially for being during a bulk of the winter months in Melbourne.
