I wasn't talking about Tony wins I was talking about a live performance on the Tony Awards.

We all know by now that the actual award has no effect on attendance (other than certain Best Musical awards), and certainly there are shows with greater viewers - but that's not what I said.

Actually, this show could run for a long time. Let's face it, aside from Broadway fanatics, do you really think that the general public (ie tourists) want to see a show about two old ladies kvetching, or masturbating teens with angst or the mousy brother from Frasier in some period piece instead of a show about a pretty girl in pink who has a cute dog and actually seems happy, achieve her goals, dance alot and make friends?

Just a thought.

And the show is in the 90's in April. At the barn of the Palace. Seems to me like it's found an audience (many of whom use Daddy's AmExcard to come again and again).

And as for the Tony's, the lowest-rated awards show on network TV, who really cares?

I agree that BLONDE will not have a short life.

It should do okay until YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, LITTLE MERMAID, and the other recognizables show up.

okay,
for those who are excited about the ONE week of good tix sales, do we reognize the "pre-sale" tickets at all? I mean, come on. These few weeks are still up in the air concerning grosses and avg tix price because of pre opening tix sales. This week, 1 million people didn't just come out of the woodwork and buy BLOnde tix.

and i think the best musical tony MIGHT have helped a little show called ave q. it also helped a dying Millie, who at the time had little tix sales. Also the tony win for sutton helped it as well.
Hairspray was huge because it was a huge tony winner. Tony's do help. The sheep of america follow winners and thats why Legally Blonde with no wins might not make it through the winter months.

and when Frankenstein, Mermaid, Wicked, and Jersey Boys are all garnering the top tix price in the fall, there might be no room for the pink show. I guess we will wait and see.

after the tony awards, wicked sold 1.9 million in tix the next day. so i think some people watch.

As good as it is, "Hairspray" did not do well on the road despite it's Tony Awards, which were trumpeted in the ads. Discounts were plenty and there were many empty seats in all three cities where I saw the tour. I don't think the Tony Awards mean a thing to the general public. "Legally Blonde" is a show people will want to see despite no "Best Musical" awards. At the very first preview in San Francisco, the lines at the merchadise booth were very long. That was an hour before the curtain even went up. After the show, the lines were even longer. Time will tell but I don't think it's going to go away anytime soon.

love musik is subscription based first of all.
Curtains is a whole different demographic. Old School Musical. How many of them are out there? Ummm..none. so the old school people who love their south pacifics will go to it.
There isn't a competition in that arena.
Where as the young people, thats what all these shows are competing for. mermaid, wicked, blonde, poppins, tarzan. The market for the young person is becoming saturated. they all can't win.

No matter what you think about the show, it getting nominated for a Tony for best musical isn't going to make or break it at this point the way business is going.

Aida didn't get one either and didn't seem to close after 8 months... in the palace.

Now what would you say if today I started over? Without a thing but this taped together four leaf clover And I'll pretend like everything is already alright And I'll run toward the sun till the castle's out of sight

AIDA had good music with flashy sets, a Tony-winning lead actress, Disney, and Elton John.

So? LEGALLY BLONDE has a score by the creators of BAT BOY. That counts for a lot, no? Christian charity will keep LEGALLY BLONDE alive.

I'll take the score of "Legally Blonde" over "Aida" any day. And that "dancing" in "Aida" was pretty bad.

The choreography in AIDA was god awful.

But I don't know how you can even call LEGALLY BLONDE's music a "score." It's banal.

AIDA's score is one of my guiltiest pleasures, and i'm actually happy it won best score.

No, of course they haven't.

And while BAT BOY had a fun, unapologetic score, I can't believe that the talented people behind that produced the crap that is BLONDE's score.

But then you sit through PIRATE QUEEN and realize how far composers can fall.

A nomination stolen form John McMartin. Sorry. Just not gonna get over that for a while.

Well, as I said, I found the "Aida" score to be awful. Not one memorable tune in the bunch. We can agree to disagree but LB was much better all around (IMHO).

I think just based on the fact that its a recongizable movie title it has a chance at staying power. Plus, they still have an apperance on the Today show to do, that they rescheduled.

Also, the music is peppy and hummable. Plus, its reviews are way better than THE WEDDING SINGER. Also, a lead actress nomination makes a difference as well, considering the women nominated is playing Elle Woods.

Tony nominations have no bearing on box office.

THE WEDDING SINGER was nominated for a bunch of Tonys too - Best Actor, Score, Book, and Musical.

But I don't see the point of these comparisons. Broadway is not a science. A show flops or it succeeds.

For now, BLONDE is doing more than well, so I don't see the point of this discussion.

responding to the person who is trying to use Tarzan as a precedent.
thats just a bad idea. That show has sunk to 40-50%. its been goin downhill for the past 6 months.
look, none of us know whats gonna happen. I was just thinking that with these other shows coming in that are HIGHLY publicized (frankenstein already has a bilboard in times sq), and that with the tony's kinda snubbing Legally Blonde for a performance on national tv, it doesn't look like it bodes well for the long lasting "hairspray" type of survival so many modern day prohpets on this board said would happen.

and I agree about mcmartin. but do we know that borle really took his spot?

Does the fact that LEGALLY BLONDE’s moves a lot of merchandise help the show run longer?

Juuuust wait for pre-sale thanks to Broadway.com's advertising to die out.. then we'll know how it's REALLY gonna do.

I saw the show on a Saturday night and it definitely wasn't at 90%. It also sucked.

I agree with the earlier post--how did the composers with a list of several fantastic shows churn out this "score"? I had such high expectations after Bat Boy, Sarah Plain and Tall and The Mice, but alas...
