Just watched the Broadway.com video of Rent in Bryant park and I must admit I was disappointed with Idina's performance. Tracie was awesome, I just felt Idina's performance was weak and uninspiring.
Flat? I haven't watched the video as I don't need to given that I was there, but she definitely was not flat. Maybe it comes across badly on the video?
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.
Edit:: I guess I should read better :) there was most definetly some flat notes in that clip.watch the video!! She kinda sounded lazy..like sliding up to the notes and not breathing them... and the top notes of the phrases were flat. It could be the video.but...I don't know...
is it just me? cuz...I have a pretty damn good ear...
and all that I could do because of you was talk of love...
It does. That's all my judgement was on as well. I do like Idina, she's very talented, but on the video she is weak. Then again, you were there so have a more informed judgement of the performance.
i'm in the same boat as stephanie... i really like idina and think shes a great performer but based on the Broadway.com video she sounded like she was kind of mumbling (sp?) and she didn't seem one bit enthusiastic! I'm sure she was fantastic the rest of the song but seeing the clip of idina and then tracie, i'd have to say tracie was much better! i wish i could have actually been there and seen the performance!
I watched the video on broadway.com and there's hardly any singing on her part...how can anyone judge her performance based on that? They showed more of the other girl singing, they didn't really give much of Idina's performance, so I won't base an opinion on that. If there's a video of the ENTIRE song, then I'll form an opinion...but, on that little clip...how could anyone form one?
Maybe she was unenthused becasue she was thinking "darn it...the moment this gets posted up on the internet, those bastards at broadwayworld.com are going to be discussing my top notes. AGAIN...." hehehe....i kid, i kid.
I'm a big Idina fan and although I was not disappointed in her performance yesterday, it was different from the "typical" Maureen take on that song. It definitely wasn't showy, belty, but more subdued and jazzy, a little more mature. I still liked it though. Tracie really proved she is more than capable of handling the role and i think she will be an awesome JOanne in the movie. I also think that the TMOLM Idina will perform in the movie and on the soundtrack will be much more aligned with her typical stage performance.
I'm not judging her performance from that clip. I don't think anyone was...I said on that clip it sounded HORRIBLE, and yes it's a short clip but a short clip can sound like crap...but it's clearly the video quality. Seasons also doesn't sound great..and with that group? it's impossible for it to sound bad!
and all that I could do because of you was talk of love...
Let's get this pessimism out of here! Idina and Tracie were ADORABLE...even in that short clip. Next time one of you have a clip on Broadway.com, we can start judging. But for now, let's just get excited that we got this preview before the movie! I'm psyched!
"First up was Max who sang "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" [...] I haven't seen that big of a reaction to a stair descent since Audra left the attic in Ragtime." --Seth Rudetsky
The video from broadway.com does not pay justice to what I saw live. Idina spoke a few lines, especially the ones bway.com seemed to focus on, but otherwise she was spectacular! Tracie did an excellent job. They were all in all a divine duo!
To whoever said they weren't judging on the video - didn't you say that ALL you saw was the video? How could you, then, be judging on anything else? You're judging her performance based on the video - not that it's a bad thing for you to do that, and maybe you thought that, which is why you denied it.
Kristin Chenoweth could barely control a Great Dane she trotted onto the stage. "Great, they gave me a dog that weighs five times what I do", she quipped. For the record, she weighs 93 pounds, and has a Maltese.
