>>>EXCLUSIVE: Hot off My Week With Marilyn, Eddie Redmayne has been set to play the role of Marius in Les Miserables, the Tom Hooper-directed musical for Universal Pictures that stars Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as Inspector Javert and Anne Hathaway as Fantine. Universal has set the Working Title-produced musical for release in the center of next year’s Oscar race with a December 7, 2012 date. Cameron Mackintosh is producing with Working Title’s Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Debra Hayward. William Nicholson wrote the script and the music is by Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil.
Redmayne, whose starring role opposite Michelle Williams in My Week With Marilyn has put him in the Oscar discussion, won a Tony Award for Red and he is preparing to star in Richard II, which is Michael Grandage’s farewell production as artistic director of Donmar Warehouse. Redmayne, who also recently wrapped the Derick Martini-directed Hick alongside Chloe Moretz and Blake Lively, is repped by CAA, manager Gene Parseghian and United Agents in the UK.<< Eddie Redmayne Joins Les Mis
Ugh! The red(dish) hair doesn't bother me a bit, but I've always found him to be completely creepy and psychotic-looking. THAT bothers me in a romantic lead.

I've never heard of him, and from the brief biographies I've found, he's an actor and a model but doesn't seem to have *any* singing experience at all. Or does he?
Really? I always found him rather attractive. He has that unique, not too Hollywood look to him. You are right though, he is not the standard romantic lead type.
He is "British attractive". LOL He does look a bit younger than 30. I figured their student uprising would be lead by the 15-30 age group for the movie. I expected casting of Marius to be closer to 20.
I expected someone closer to 20 as well. Makes me wonder how they'll go with Cosette.
On the positive side, he IS a good actor ... Maybe his talent will win me over.
I sure hope he can sing.
EDIT: And better than just reading the Tony interview, here's his acceptance speech at the ceremony. I'm assuming he screen-tested for Marius, so maybe he's growing into his looks a little more (at 30).
Well, this is the first bit of authentically exciting casting news for this movie so far. I, for one, think he's absolutely gorgeous and found him completely captivating in RED. Well-suited!

It's really left-field casting and he was never on my radar for this role but I love it. He's an incredibly talented actor, looks much younger than his age and presumably, if he's got the role, then he can sing, he certainly has a wonderful speaking voice (can;t wait to see him in Richard II at the Donmar). I don't think for a second in this day and age they would even consider casting someone who couldn't sing, I mean pulling a Marni Nixon nowadays just wouldn't wash with the public, surely the'd feel like they were being cheated.
No, it's not a better picture of him. They're both horrible. But he's a good looking guy and fit the romantic lead very well in Pillars of the Earth opposite Hailey Atwell.
What an odd choice. The casting of him and Helena Bonham Carter are starting to deflate my enthusiasm for this film. But I'll try and keep an open mind and hope I'll be pleasantly surprised.
