Curiousity: Why is it assumed that ACateredAffair & Cry-Baby will be nominated for best musical? I do not intend for this comment to sound snarky i would just love to hear about these anticipated new musicals! Those who've seen it please write your opinions! Thank you =]
TOS hasn't even been officially announced yet. You really think it will open by May?
There are only seven new musicals this season (not counting TOS, if it opens in time). That includes Young Frankenstein and The Little Mermaid, which have been almost universally panned, and Passing Strange, which they may consider a Special Event instead of a musical.

I wonder if Passing strange not being considered a musical would be borderline offensive - even if the structure sounds unsual, it doesn't mean it isn't one.

I'm considering it one of the musicals, I'm just allowing for the possibility. The Tony committee has made some weird calls, and right now, the only Special Event is Duran Duran, which doesn't leave much competition. Moving PS to the Events category would drastically increase its chances of winning.

PASSING STRANGE is being billed as 'A New Musical' - I don't know *WHY* it wouldn't be considered "Well Mike, it's more-so a concert with fluid choreography." "It's too loud, obnoxious and 'out there' to be taken as a musical!" - And to those naysayers I aptly reply, "What?" So the structure isn't 'to be expected' - WHO CARES? It's something new, vibrant, fresh, exciting, etc. If it evokes emotion from its audiences, that's all the more reason to appreciate it.
The pickings have been slim so far, with only Xanadu reaping much favorable press. Cry-Baby and A Catered Affair (I haven't seen either yet) seem to be in the traditional Broadway mode (on paper) and the other two (Passing Strange and In the Heights) are wild cards that do not have overwhelming advance sales, so far (i.e., it is more incumbent upon PS/ITH to garner some real positive press and public interest to be in the running for a Tony nod). Therefore, by the process of elimination. Cry-Baby and Catered Affair are logical choices. I doubt whether all four will all be drop-dead successes. I think the Tony voters are somewhat inclined to dismiss YF and TLM, but if two or more of the others are real stinkers, voters may be forced to give one (or both) a nomination nod. Of course, all is subject to change and my crystal ball isn't working all that well, so, who knows?
I think that both Cry-Baby and A Catered Affair will certainly get nominated for Best Musical along with In The Heights. That leaves one more slot open for Passing Strange. If they decide to classify Passing Strange as a Special Event, then probably either Young Frankenstein or The Little Mermaid may be nominated to fill the slot. Although I think we all know that even if YF or TLM managed to get nominated, they'd have pretty much no shot at winning.

Just curious, why aren't you considering Xanadu as an option? It's done the best critically of all the new musicals so far (including out-of-town tryouts for shows that had them).

I completely forgot about Xanadu and title of show! With those two also in the running, I'll be very surprised if either YF or Mermaid gets nominated.

Haven't had a chance yet to glimpse something of Catered Affair, but I've listened through the demos of Cry Baby and it was plain awful. So the show has to feature a lot alongside this score to please the tony voters...
is there an actual rule saying four need to be nominated? because only two were nominated in 1995. Although that opens up an entire can of worms for me.
[but it's really not fair to have Sunset Boulevard and Smoky Joe's Cafe be the only two nominees for Best Musical. nor is it fair to have Glenn Close and Rebecca Luker be the only two nominees for Best Actress in a Musical.]
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

with two of them being bumped out.
The Tony Nominating Committee is a group of 25 New Yorkers who couldn't care less about a production's size, so a nomination for YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN based solely on that is not a considering factor.

XANADU is ineligible for a nomination for Best Score, but of course it can get nominated for Best Musical.
Look at 2006 Best Musical winner JERSEY BOYS. That score was written years ago.

Either TLM or Young Frankenstein is going to be nominated. Both present the kind of visual spectacle that has made musicals with lukewarm reviews like Mary Poppins into candidates.
Xanadu's only disadvantage is its early opening. It had a lot of great hype when it opened, but that was a long time ago. I hope Tony voters don't forget about.
I can't see it winning though.
A Catered Affair got great reviews in San Diego, and CryBaby did well also. It's really a crap shoot, but with seven musicals (possibly eight, although TOS seems to simple to garner a best musical nom. Maybe best score or book) nominated, its really difficult to predict.
LoveMusik garnered the most Drama Desk noms, but didn't get a Tony nom for best musical. It's unpredictable.
