Even though I liked Schmigadoon a lot and was happy with it winning the big prize, I've long been disgruntled that Passion is at the bottom of the list of Broadway runs for Best Musical winners, and I wouldn't be sad to see that indignity come to an end this year.

Ragtime broke records week after week after week, won countless accolades and was praised by critics and audiences alike. It extended as long as it could and was a huge success. The majority of shows sucked this season but that was never one of them.

If you include previews, A STRANGE LOOP (my other all time favorite) closed with less performances than PASSION (314 vs. 332) since the latter had 50 previews.

But the sentiment is the same. It was cute, but somewhat defanged version of the tv-show on stage due to the need to cut it down, speed it up, and make juuuuuust enough changes for it to get the recognition at the Tonys that it didn’t really get from the Emmys or GGs

re: Wicked....I dont think there has been an "insane downward spiral"--it has returned to where it was before the movies. I dont think people are "Wicked-ed out"--it just missed selling the most tickets this week. I dont think the 2nd movie soured people on seeing the show. (again, just missed being #1 ticket seller). I think the Wicked-premium is just gone. I think Wicked is/was a VERY HEAVY tourist show--and that the demo CAN see the movie (good/bad/otherwise), instead of the show. Lion King/Alladin are animated in comparison. Until Paddington, what show are truly kids appropriate? (OK, my first show was MAME--but there were no Disney shows--and parenting was so different). Unfortunately, at these levels, Wicked is likely losing money weekly--as they were pre-Movie#1. But there must be "reserves" to get them to those really big holiday sales.

Thanks for this information!

However, these lists don't tend to pay attention to preview performances. Passion is still officially at the bottom.

In addition, I don't think A Strange Loop belongs at the bottom, either. It wasn't entirely my cup of tea, but it was clearly a singular achievement, unlike Schmigadoon.

Which, again, I liked a lot, but which belongs lower on the list than either of those shows.

ROCKY will do fine in the Fall when that show always sells well during Halloween. Might not last through the holidays.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Yes. Their Saturday Halloween shows at 5 & 10pm are already selling well.

In my personal opinion, Schmigadoon belongs on a list of the worst Best Musical winners in history (a list where I might also include Moulin Rouge, Applause, Memphis, and a few others).

It might be *the* worst Score winner of a musical (excluding Christmas Carol from the Covid year, which was barely a score) - imho.

But I'm glad others had fun at it.

Rocky is now out of the period where the majority of its audiences were Roundabout subscribers, which created artificial scarcity of tickets and created the appearance of massive demand.

"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."

As much as I’ve grown disappointed with MR, I think the COVID year really should be afforded a bit more grace. The other options were TINA (which hinged on the central performance) and JAGGED LITTLE PILL (an original story with all the subtlety of a max-volume after school special). We talk about bad seasons forgetting that that one has been the worst of recent memory, though it was due to outside forces.
