I could go either way on this. While they aren't having any problems selling tickets, the buzz on her performance would probably be enough reason for more people to go see Wicked again if they bring her to NY. However, unlike many shows with "stars" in the leads, you never hear of half the audience walking out when the "star" is out with Wicked (e.g. Cheno or Idina). With Sunset Boulevard, when Glenn Close didn't go on, the house was usually half empty and the line at the box office for refunds was amazing.
I SERIOUSLY doubt Ana would come to New York, especially so soon. She originated the role in Chicago. The producers really want the show to keep doing well there so they can open more sit-downs. Why would they send her to New York if Wicked's already doing amazing in New York without her? It just makes no sense. She's not even that much better than everyone else. I think she's the worst Elphaba I've seen so far, but that's just me. I was also quite sure she was contracted to be in Chicago for a year. Where is everyone getting their information from?
Wrong-o. Eden is already cast as the standby after Saycon leaves for a different show. Stephanie was apparently offered the role, but I think she'll stick with the tour. I really doubt Shoshana will extend. She wants to pursue a music career. She was having trouble deciding whether to take the role to begin with. She's really into pursuing a career in pop music.
Well, all I know is what I was told by the producers backstage on May 31st. It is possible that things have changed since then. However, at that time only Stephanie and Eden had been offered the role.
Wow, which producer? Mr. Platt or Mr. Stone? If you actually spoke to a producer you have more authenticity than I do, haha. Well, I'm fairly sure that Eden is taking over for Saycon as Standby, maybe she'll be standby until Shoshana leaves and then take over the role? Or maybe Stephanie will come to NY? We shall see! As long as it isn't Ana (and I doubt it would be...)
Platt. It was in Megan Hilty's dressing room after her first show. So, as far as I know, Ana will not be offered the role. Which is fine with me.
I know Saycon wants to be in "The Color Purple" and, like you said, Shoshana wants a music career. So, I'm fairly sure it will be either Stephanie or Eden.
HBP. GIVE IT UP!!!! You are the only person in the world who thinks Ana is a bad Elphaba. Every review has been great. The only reason Ana may not go to NYC is because she may do something much bigger. Have you even seen the other Elphabas? Have you listened to the OBC cd? You mustn't being paying much attention to the people responding to the threads posted here.
I doubt that Eden will do it. She said before she would prefer not to return to Wicked? And yet she did a leg of the tour. I don't know....unpredictable. Why dontcha ask TinyToon?
I think Stephanie will do as much as the tour...then go onto something else.
Saycon, as mentioned, wants to do the Color Purple.
Brandi might get it...and then there will be a new cast in store. I dunno. But it's in JANUARY. Long time away.
Um... sondhfan? That was pretty inappropriate. I don't like Ana as Elphaba. I shouldn't think that she's good because "so many other people think so." And I didn't say she won't take over in NY because she's bad. I said she probably won't take over because she's probably going to stay in Chicago. Chill out. I think Ana Gasteyer is the worst Elphaba. Ever. Ever ever ever.
And I have seen other Elphabas. Idina, Shoshana, Stephanie and Kristy Cates. So I do have something to compare her to. I still think she's bad. As Elphaba. In Wicked. Good on SNL, though. Updated On: 8/3/05 at 08:54 PM
Dear HBP, I don't think it is inappropriate to comment on your rather acerbic and baseless criticism of Ana. You're right, you can disagree with everyone. As you said, "maybe that's just me". Right again.
Who needs to chill out? Maybe it's the person who used a little hyperbole :"Ana Gasteyer is the worst Elphaba Ever. Ever. ever ever" That's not calling her bad? I hope you never get such a wonderful compliment. While I am not as fortunate as you to have seen and heard all of the Elphabas, the ones I have seen and heard are all good or great but in Wicked paralance "just not as popular as" Ana. Ana is the best of many great ones.
NYC would be lucky to get her in its Wicked cast. And given Ana's NYC connections, it's a good possibility she will be there.
I know this might upset one blogger you may know who said" I just hope it's not Ana". Keep up your lonely struggle against reality. Ana is amazing. If anyone else is out there who thinks Ana is bad or the worst, I'd like to hear from (him or her).
SondhFan...it's pretty ridiculous to say HBP is the only one in the world who doesn't like Ana as Elphaba (speaking of hyperbole...). I'm SURE there are others. How could you call an opinion a "struggle against reality?"
Chicago sit downs have six month contracts. "Show Boat" and "Ragtime" and "Joseph". That doesn't mean anyone will leave. They can always renew. Whether or not Ana will renew wouldn't be known for another few months. It's possible that the Chicago cast of "Wicked" were given 9 month contracts if they are renewable in January, or maybe Ana was given a 9 month contract and everyone else a one year. Whatever, if a contract is up, there is always the possibility to renew it.
Exactly. It was my intended sarcasm and hypebole. The anti -Ana is attempting(as we all are by our postings to express and maybe influence another's opinion)her negative opinion. The reality is that Ana is great. It's not too deep. By the way did you have an opinion on Ana's Elphaba?
I just saw Ana last week. She was pretty great. It took a few to get use to her style of singing after only hearing Idina. I have to say I like both of them. Ana had great acting and just got engulfed in the character. Her comic timing, over course, was suberb. Also, as G(a)linda, Kate Reinders was great. She just remined me a lot of Cheno, which isn't a bad thing. She sounded a little week on the opening, but was great by the time Popular came around. Kristoffer was great. He was such a good singer. All in all a great cast. Is there anyway I can read the reviews? I didn't know they printed actual reviews of the sitdown production. Thanks. Also, is Eden doing the entire tour of just the one leg? I couldn't remember which rumor i read.
SondhFan, I can't quite figure out what the heck "The anti -Ana is attempting(as we all are by our postings to express and maybe influence another's opinion)her negative opinion." is supposed to mean.
No, I don't have an opinion on Ana, as I haven't seen her (and I am very much hoping she comes to Broadway after her run in Chicago), and I was thrilled with the idea of her playing this part once this news was out. From the audio I've heard, I can possibly picture her being "the worst ever," but the point is others may think so, and they're entitled to their opinions. For example, I could easily say someone is more than a little out of his mind for thinking Shoshana is a better Elphaba than Idina, and I may very well think that (Before anyone jumps down my throat, I'm just being silly ). But that other person is entitled to his opinion, and it in no way makes MY opinion the REALITY.
Dear Brdwy Girl: Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion. Everyone knows that and I have said that on my previous posts on other Wicked threads as you can readily find.
I really don't want to get involved in a philosphy discussionand start on Plato's discussion of opinions.
The main point I was trying to make is not that that Ana is the best(my opinion) but rather how can her performance be considered bad. It's like someone saying that not only is Michael Jordan not the best bb player but that he is bad or the worst. Someone may certainly entertain such an opinion but it would be pretty baseless.
By the way 2 more points: Where did you hear an audio clip of Ana, I'd love to get one? and 2 for "not expressing an opinion" what does "I can see someone possibly thinking she is the worst" signify? Could it possibly be an opinion? Whose? I think it might be yours but then it may only be me "picturing" you thinking that. I hope you get a chance to see Ana perform because I think you might possibly picture her being outstanding.
