Posted: 1/6/09 at 1:58amI was there on closing night with my godson, who is 14 years old. This was the third time he saw this show, and convinced me to go with him on closing night. I enjoyed the show-which I didn't think that I would. It wasn't a masterpiece, but a fun night of theater with very talented kids. Jason Robert Brown gave a very touching speech at the end- he really put his heart into this production.

I think the comment condemning the creative meant:
REALIZING how much is charged for a b'way show, they did not deliver. Just because it's kids doesn't mean that quality is not required: it's ON B'WAY after all...not at my local theater.
I love the rationale that 13 will do well at local and reginal theatre....but it wasnt CREATED for that....they took it to B'way and deserves the same critical eye that all theater has.
I also love the posteers claiming that this show has begun the careers of these young actors. We don't know that yet. You can't make that comment until we find out if any of them will actually HAVE a career. LOTS of folks do one B'way show and never get any "real" work ahead. That only works as a "looking back" kind of statement. Like now: we can look back at the revival of the Mickey Mouse Club and see what members NOW have a career: Spears, Timberlake....I know there were others but don't remember who.
The vast MAJORITY of the (not AS)young cast members of Spring Awakening will never find (professional)work again -- or certainly not of the same magnitude. The same will be true here. And this has little to do with sheer talent....it's just a tough biz. The part I find saddest about that reality: how sad to have "peaked" at 15 or even 22! "I made my b'way debut with a leading role at 16, and never got cast again."
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I don't disagree with your last statement but there is a little cynical voice inside me saying that local and regional theatre is exactly what the show was created for and where it will make most of its money - Broadway was just a step on the ladder (not that I think the creative team didn't try to make the best it could be - I've not seen it, so can't comment on the quality of the production....).

I've only been a member of this board for a couple of months, but I have heard WAY creepier stalkerish things than this from many different people.
As for the show, I never got the chance to see it, but understand that the kids in the show are quite talented.
I wish them all the best, and hope to see the show on tour/regional theatre in the near future!

I saw the show twice, once being the closing. It wasn't a masterpiece by any means, but it was a fun time.

I was at the final performance and had a wonderful time. The cast is so talented and it was heartbreaking seeing them tear up during "A Little More Homework."
Jason Robert Brown's curtain speech had me choked up, and I send my best wishes out to the actors in the future. The material may not have been perfect(the score is a lot of fun!!), but I grew to love the show because of the enthusiasm of the kids. I saw 13 five times and never once did a single actor give less than 110%. That's a lot more than I can say for some adult Broadway actors I've seen.
I will miss 13 and hope to see the actors working again soon.
Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco.

That's a terrible comparison.
This sort of thing happens with ANY job/profession.... most of the time.
Why wouldn't the naive innocent kiddies, who are getting paid minimum (I assume), give 110% ??

TheCharleston: Why is that a bad comparison? I was just commenting on the fact that the reason I ultimately liked the show so much was the performances given by the actors, and not the actual material. I would never say the show was without its faults, but the actors were not one of them.
When a show is flopping you can find actors walking through their roles, praying for the show/run to be over. All I'm saying is that these kids never stooped to that level of unprofessionalism and really gave amazing performances until the end.
And who says they are "naive innocent kiddies?" It may have been many of their Broadway debuts, but most knew the knocks of the business before 13.

You want creepy, try the middle-aged male pediatric nurse from Georgia who came up to New York to see 13 and showed me the CD he'd just gotten autographed by all the kids. That's creepy.
