re: Respected singers whose voices grate your nerves

Idina Menzel.

For some reason her voice really just grinds my gears.

Who has bad things to say about Honk!? Why hasn't it reached Broadway yet, by the way?

"Different" is just one of many songs from that show that fall into this category, actually. How about "Now I've Seen You" or "Every Tear A Mother Cries"?

Oh, I know she was sick... that's what they said. I wasn't knocking Idina at all! This just makes an interesting topic, I think, as I don't think lead actors (especially Tony winners) often have to leave their shows in the middle of the show.
Idina leaving during intermission...
 Jun 14 2004, 01:20:28 AM
Just wanted to report that at the 7:30 showing of Wicked this Sunday, it was announced that due to illness, Idina Menzel wouldn't be continuing and her standby Eden Espinoza (sp?) would be taking over in the 2nd act. This was one of the recent "shows for the understudies" as Chenoweth, Grey, and Butz were out in the first act.

Just thought I'd share!

Eden, Bundy, Cusick as Fiyero and McCourt as the Wizard... exceptional! But kind of a bummer to see the Tony winner call it quits af

I'm glad to see anything anyone cares about these days is Idina-bashing and such...
I wanna be a producer...

No, really, I do. I'm not talking about the song from The Producers.

How exactly does one go about being a producer of a Broadway show, or any major New York production? I know it doesn't have to be completely about money... everyone has to start somewhere. For instance, did Hal Prince aspire to be one of the most respected Broadway producers or did it just fall into his lap? I've produced a small-scale high school production with sole responsibility, so I know what goes into the t

I was fortunate enough to see Cerveris and Esparza at the Kennedy Center's Sondheim festival two or three summers ago.

Both gentlemen are excellent performers in their own respective ways. It just wasn't Esparza's year. He wouldn't have won for Taboo which, unfortunately, was a failure. I'm not bashing Taboo at all, either. I own the OBCR and I love it.

If Esparza was in Assassins like he should be, I'm very confident he would have won hands down.

2002 - Sutton Foster
2003 - Marissa Jaret Winokur
2004 - Idina Menzel

They're all young! And in most cases, these girls won over big name Broadway veterans such as Bernadette Peters and Donna Murphy who dominated this category in the 1900s. Thoughts or theories, anyone?

Hmmmm.....

I agree, Peter. Especially when the "dream ballet" sequence is included... a neat plot device and pretty music, sure. But it doesn't necessarily advance the plot. By contrast, every other song in WSS serves an obvious purpose, respectively. "Somewhere" is just a pretty song, though. :)

My favorites... I suppose most of these have been mentioned, but they are the cream of the crop and deserve to be mentioned again!

HONK!
Closer Than Ever
The Apple Tree
Romance/Romance
The Mystery of Edwin Drood

Margie-- do you have Infinite Joy: The Songs of William Finn, Live at Joe's Pub? If not, buy it now. It's definitely worth it. A PLETHORA of brilliant performances of all great music.

Just some advice:

Unless you have a burning desire to teach... don't make it your "fall back." If teaching isn't something you will absolutely LOVE doing, don't waste your time getting a degree in it. If you love theatre, go for the degree in theatre. If you love teaching as much as your love theatre, if not more, the education back-up plan is acceptable. Otherwise, you are only kidding yourself and your future students.

will the tony show be more appealing this year?
 Jun 2 2004, 03:07:02 PM
Oh, Wally, I wasn't _defending_ CBS's decision to pull in big name Hollywood stars to present at the Tony's. I hope Kidman doesn't sing, either. Namo, I know that she's been on Broadway and West End but my point was that she's not KNOWN for her theatre works. Except for something called MOULIN ROUGE, perhaps; hence the term "musical."

*sigh* Diva! Just kidding. I know what its like to be a diva... umm, what?

I'd help you but I never saw Tad Hamilton... go to imdb.com though, and search for the movie. I'm sure you'll find answers there.

Yeah, its 4 AM. I need to leave for work in 12 hours. So now I'll go sleep for the next 11 hours. Life is tough.

Husky jeans... haha. I used to have the opposite problem... never could find jeans small enough. I hate when the ones I wear now get tattered at the bottoms and I trip myself up. The last time I was at a baseball game, I tripped down the stairs. That was embarrassing. At least the Yankees won, though. Baseball is a great thing, I can't get enough of the Yankees. Most girls think Derek Jeter's pretty hot; I suppose they're right. Speaking of attractive people, just saw a preview for "Raising Hele

I just saw Shrek 2 lastnight... had NO IDEA it was Jennifer Saunders until I saw the credits! I was thoroughly impressed with her performance... has she ever done a musical, Broadway or West End?

Anyone interested in starting a Jennifer Saunders fan club?
