As I said, I am fine with it here, so I would never do that. I just thought there was beginning to be a little bit of a pile-on against the contrary post, and I don't think that's really called for.

Though I have no objection to this thread being on the main board and I thank Highland Guy for sharing the information, I think people are being a little harsh on RUkiddingme. There's a colorable argument that this is not directly on-topic. I acknowledge your arguments that COVID is still very much an important issue for Broadway, but so is the presidential election, and I personally would hesitate to start a thread about that on the main board.

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 9/22/24

I think most of us heard about this, but that still doesn't explain why it makes sense to stay open another three months when the show seems to be losing money each week. (I loved it, by the way.)

Not only am I skeptical of it, I am not aware of any tax break for business losses that are greater than the losses themselves, so this explanation never makes any sense to me (for Broadway or any other industry). I'm open to being educated about this, but I've ask

Audra McDonald-led GYPSY for 2024-2025 Season!

If some of you can already picture so vividly what these performances will look like under the direction of George C. Wolfe, in accord with his still largely unknowable concept for this production, your imaginations are much more capable than mine!

Count me in as another admirer of the Sunset score, including the title song, which I think has vivid lyrics and a lot of energy. (And this production cuts the two songs I don't really care for!)

I mainly know her from her years-long recurring role as the grandmother on The Middle - an outstanding show that got good ratings, lasting nine seasons, but somehow managed to fly under most people's radar. She was excellent in it, of course.<

Novels That Could Make Great Musicals
 Sep 10 2024, 11:09:05 PM

If I thought a novel could make a great musical, I'd start writing it myself rather than suggesting it to all of you.

That being said, I think Blood Meridian could make a great musical.

Jim Parsons, Katie Holmes, Zoey Deutch to Star in ‘Our Town’ Revival on Broadway

Matt Rogers said: "Good lord. The madness continues. The greed knows no bounds."

I'm sympathetic with this view, but I have mixed feelings about it. Most shows lose money for their investors. In particular, a lot of the shows that I love lose every penny the investors put up. smiley Considering Broadway investors as a group (and I know that's an oversimplification), it's really hard to characterize them as greedy. I imagine there are, on average, much more profitable ways for multi-millionaires to use their money. And maybe some of these investors have to make a ton of money on star-driven plays so that they can afford to lose their shirts on Days of Wine and Roses or American Psycho.

Also, if you ignore the Dear Evan Hanson Tony win, they still have one of each of the awards for four entirely different properties, so I don't think this situation is at all comparable to the others mentioned in this thread.

Forgive my ignorance, but how can a tax write-off ever really be a money-making (or -saving) proposition? Tax deductions for average people never exceed the loss or expenditure incurred, and are usually quite a bit less than that. Is there ever really a situation where you lose a sum of money on a show

The Outsiders, with the top average ticket price this week, is succeeding beyond all my expectations, and I love that. What do you think is driving its success compared to Kimberly Akimbo and A Strange Loop, the two previous Best Musical winners?

I suspect the familiarity of the title has a lot to do with it. In saying that, I don't mean to question the show's quality at all, but The Outsiders is vastly outperforming

There are definitely some younger people (like, younger than 40) who have little idea who she is, and others for whom this singularly polarizing individual is just a turn-off as the su
