i was watching the news the other day, and there was a story about how some people think that in like another ten yrs bway will have mostly musicals w/ music from old singing groups and things like that (like mama mia and good vibrations) and not much original music. i sure hope that isnt the direction bway is going in...that would make me really sad!!! as much as i like mama mia, i do prefer original bway music...what do u guys think?

I agree.. Broadway needs new musicals.. like Avenue Q and Wicked.. Little Women and Brooklyn.. Chita Rivera said on Broadway the Golden Years.. it makes her sad when she sees a show that has no original sung music win a Tony for best NEW musical.. (Contact).. Also, I still think that if it wasn't for the puppetry in Lion King (not a NEW musical.. sure the idea was new but the show had already been a movie), Ragtime would have won for new musical in 1998.. We need new Music on Broadway...

You know what makes me sad? That people complain about not enough original music on Broadway but new musicals don't get much of a chance these days. New shows are just ripped to pieces by critics and closes soon after it opens. I just wish new shows have better chances on Broadway.
A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.
Broadway should give incentives for new and up-and-coming composers to work on the musical theatre genre. Are there festivals or yearly prizes awarded for promising new work? How much chance does a new work have of being heard by the powers-that-be? Are there venues that are readily available, for very little cost, for initial stagings. I am not a theatre professional, just a theatre fan, but I think a receptive environment for new work should be available to encourage the creation of new musicals.
Perhaps, to start with, the Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center ( for archived shows) should operate more like a museum - provide easier access, so that it can provide inspiration for new, talented musical composers.
